This is the Beriev Be-200 Altair, the only amphibious water bomber on Earth powered by jet engines.<\/p><p>Beriev built it on the bones of the Cold War A-40 Albatross, a giant anti-submarine flying boat. Where the military machine hunted submarines, the civilian Altair hunts fire. Two Progress D-436TP turbofans are mounted on top of the wing roots, keeping their intakes clear of spray during the violent business of scooping. On a firefighting run the Be-200 skims the surface at close to takeoff speed, drops retractable scoops, and fills eight internal tanks with roughly 12,000 litres. It has fought blazes in Portugal, Greece, Israel, Italy and Turkey, often leased in for the worst of the summer season when local fleets are overwhelmed.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The Be-200 is the world's only amphibious jet aircraft, able to scoop roughly 12 tonnes of water in about 14 seconds while skimming the surface.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Simple Flying<\/strong> &mdash; aviation publication<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>It is fast for its class, cruising far quicker than the propeller-driven water bombers it flies alongside, which means shorter gaps between drops.
