The SR-71 was being pushed toward retirement, and it seemed inconceivable that the United States would give up the ability to overfly its enemies at extreme speed and altitude. Observers reported triangular aircraft over the American southwest and the North Sea. Pilots and plane-spotters described shapes that matched no known aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>None of it ever produced a clear photograph or a piece of hardware. Witnesses described strange contrails shaped like donuts on a rope, a puffy, segmented trail that some engineers said could be the signature of an exotic pulse-detonation engine.<\/p>\n<p>There were sounds, too. In his memoir, Rich flatly denied that a hypersonic Aurora existed.<\/p>\n<p>The word Aurora, he explained, had been a budgetary code name tied to the B-2 bomber program, not a secret spy plane.
