Some yards short of the tree line, the earth stirred, then opened. A head appeared, then a pair of shoulders in a made-over greatcoat, and a man hauled himself out of a hole no wider than his hips and lay still in the snow, listening to the searchlights sweep the wire behind him.<\/p>\n<p>This is where the true story begins &mdash; not on a motorcycle, and not with an American at the throttle, but with cold, patience and a rope signal tugged along a tunnel that had come up short of the trees.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;padding:20px;border-radius:8px;margin:24px 0\"><strong>Datos r\u00e1pidos<\/strong><ul><li>Camp: Stalag Luft III, a Luftwaffe-run POW camp near Sagan (today &Zcaron;aga&nacute;, Poland)<\/li><li>Three tunnels were dug &mdash; codenamed Tom, Dick and Harry<\/li><li>Harry ran about 102 metres; the breakout came on the night of 24&ndash;25 March 1944<\/li><li>76 men got clear of the wire; 73 were recaptured within days<\/li><li>On Hitler&rsquo;s personal order, 50 of the recaptured airmen were murdered by the Gestapo<\/li><li>Only three reached freedom: Norwegians Per Bergsland and Jens M&uuml;ller, and Dutchman Bram van der Stok<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Camp Built to Be Escape-Proof<\/h2>\n<p>Stalag Luft III sat near the town of Sagan, some hundred miles south-east of Berlin, in what is now Poland. It was run by the Luftwaffe for captured Allied airmen, and the Germans had thought about escape before the prisoners did. The huts stood on stilts so that any digging beneath them would be seen. Seismograph microphones were sunk into the ground along the perimeter to catch the scrape of a spade. The subsoil was bright yellow sand, conspicuous against the grey topsoil of the compound.<\/p>\n<p>The camp&rsquo;s designers had, in short, imagined a great many ways out and closed each of them. What they had not reckoned with was a South African-born barrister with a talent for organising other men.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jj1grHE7x04\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Big X and the Three Tunnels<\/h2>\n<p>Squadron Leader Roger Bushell &mdash; a Cambridge law graduate, skier and Spitfire pilot shot down over Dunkirk &mdash; had already escaped twice and been recaptured twice. At Sagan he took charge of the escape committee under the code name &lsquo;Big X&rsquo;, and conceived something on an unprecedented scale: not one man slipping away, but two hundred, in civilian clothes and carrying forged papers, walking out through one of three tunnels dug at once.<\/p>\n<p>They were named Tom, Dick and Harry, and the rule was that the words were never spoken aloud in any other context. The tunnels went straight down before turning, to defeat the microphones, and were shored with bed boards stolen by the thousand. Tom was discovered by the guards in September 1943; work quietly shifted to Harry, which was finished early in 1944.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #455a64;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Everyone here is living on borrowed time. Three bloody deep, bloody long tunnels will be dug &mdash; Tom, Dick, and Harry. One will succeed!&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Squadron Leader Roger Bushell<\/strong> &mdash; &lsquo;Big X&rsquo;, head of the Stalag Luft III escape committee<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Night of the Breakout<\/h2>\n<p>Harry surfaced on the night of 24 March. At once the plan began to fray. The exit, when it broke through, came up short of the sheltering trees, in open view of a guard tower. Men could leave only in the gaps between searchlight sweeps, and an air raid blacked out the camp lighting and stalled the queue underground. Instead of two hundred, seventy-six got clear before the seventy-seventh was spotted in the snow.<\/p>\n<p>For a few hours, dozens of Allied airmen were loose across the Reich, scattering by train and on foot toward Sweden, Switzerland and Spain. Within days, 73 of the 76 were back in custody. Hitler, enraged, first ordered that every recaptured man be shot. G&ouml;ring warned that a wholesale massacre would invite reprisals against German aircrew held by the Allies; the figure was lowered, and Himmler fixed it at fifty. The men were taken out in twos by car, told they might stretch their legs at the roadside, and shot from behind.<\/p>\n<p>Roger Bushell was among them, murdered near Saarbr&uuml;cken alongside his French companion Bernard Scheidhauer. When the killings became known, the British Foreign Secretary rose in the Commons; after the war the RAF Police pursued the killers across a shattered continent, and many were tried and hanged.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7o9fW568L-8\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Three Who Made It Home<\/h2>\n<p>Only three of the seventy-six reached safety. Per Bergsland and Jens M&uuml;ller, both Norwegian pilots, made their way to the Baltic port of Stettin and were smuggled aboard a ship to neutral Sweden. Bram van der Stok, a Dutch airman with a gift for languages, travelled the length of occupied Europe by train and on foot, crossed the Pyrenees into Spain, and reached Gibraltar in July. Three &lsquo;home runs&rsquo; out of seventy-six &mdash; a bitter arithmetic for so much labour and courage.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #607d8b;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;His Majesty&rsquo;s Government must record their solemn protest&hellip; those responsible will be brought to exemplary justice.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Anthony Eden<\/strong> &mdash; British Foreign Secretary, House of Commons, 23 June 1944<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Screen and the Truth<\/h2>\n<p>The 1963 film gave the story its immortality, and we forgive it much. But the record deserves its corrections. There was no motorcycle leap for the Swiss border; Steve McQueen&rsquo;s celebrated chase was invented for the cinema. And though American prisoners had helped dig the tunnels, they had been moved to a separate compound months before the breakout, so no American took part in the escape itself. The men who crawled through Harry were British, Commonwealth and European.<\/p>\n<p>What the film could not exaggerate was the cost. Fifty educated, disciplined young men, most of whom had done nothing on the night but walk into the dark, were murdered for the act of trying to be free.
