The Reaper is not an autonomous weapon. In all cases, military personnel in a ground station decide on the employment of the aircraft and its weapons.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Netherlands Ministry of Defence<\/strong> &mdash; official statement, 20 August 2026 (translated from Dutch)<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>That is a political sentence as much as a technical one. Armed drones remain contentious in Dutch politics, and the ministry is pre-empting the argument rather than waiting for it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why They Changed Their Minds<\/h2><p>The official reasoning is unsentimental. Finding a target and then handing the coordinates to somebody else costs time, and time is the one thing you do not have when the target is threatening your own troops. An armed Reaper closes that loop: it sees, and it shoots, without waiting for a fighter to arrive.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The requirement first appeared in the Defensienota 2022. The GBU-12 arms the F-35. A newer variant of the Hellfire arms the Apache. Nothing here is exotic; what is new is the platform carrying them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Eight Aircraft, and a Long Road to 2028<\/h2><p>The Netherlands originally ordered four MQ-9As and doubled that to eight in August 2023. The four newest airframes were built already prepared for weapons. The original four need modification.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The type made its operational debut from the Dutch Caribbean in 2022, supporting civil authorities around Cura&ccedil;ao, and has since deployed to Romania for intelligence gathering on NATO&rsquo;s eastern flank. Each mission is flown by a pilot and a sensor operator, with imagery analysts turning the feed into intelligence in near real time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Full operational weapons employment is not expected until 2028. Thursday&rsquo;s flight was the first step of a work-up that still has two years to run, with live-munition training and crew qualification ahead of it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>One note on detail: several outlets have reported the training round as a GBU-12 practice weapon. The Dutch MoD said only &ldquo;oefenmunitie&rdquo; &mdash; training munitions &mdash; and did not name the type.
