There is no air out there to push against and no air to carry heat away. A motor that behaves impeccably at sea level can behave very differently in a vacuum.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>So the Stage 2 motor was fired inside a chamber that reproduces those conditions, and instrumented for the three things that matter: thrust, chamber pressure, and combustion stability. One interceptor, one shot at one object. It is designed with better discrimination against decoys and countermeasures, a modular architecture, and what Lockheed calls a &ldquo;born-digital&rdquo; development process. The intent is fewer interceptors expended per threat, and a better chance against a target that is actively trying to look like several targets.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Caveat Worth Stating Plainly<\/h2><p>This test validated one propulsion element. Not an interceptor, not a kill vehicle, not an intercept. The NGI has never flown.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7K9hh7e2unQ\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p>There was a second, separate milestone earlier in the month that has been widely conflated with this one: around 5 August, Lockheed completed a burst test of the second-stage motor case, pressurising a water-filled carbon-fibre case past expected launch loads until it failed. Different test, different question, same fortnight.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>NGI also sits underneath the Golden Dome initiative announced in May 2025, but it is not the space-based interceptor layer that has attracted most of the attention and most of the cost estimates. NGI is the ground-based, exo-atmospheric strategic layer &mdash; the part that already exists in concept and now needs replacing in metal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Critical Design Review comes later this year. A first flight test comes after that. Fielding, if the schedule holds, in 2030.
