So when France planned its great victory parade in 1919, its pilots expected to fly over the celebrations. Instead, the story goes, they were told to <em>march<\/em> \u2014 on foot, like infantry. To men who had fought and died in the skies over the Western Front, it stung.<\/p>\r\n<p>The airmen decided to answer in their own language. One of their number would fly under the Arc de Triomphe itself. The first volunteer, the ace Jean Navarre, was killed while practising just weeks before. Charles Godefroy took his place.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 22px;\">A gap the width of an aeroplane<\/h2>\r\n<p>The numbers are what make it terrifying. The arch\u2019s central opening is roughly 14 metres wide and 29 metres high. A Nieuport\u2019s wings span a large fraction of that width, leaving almost no margin for error on either side, and none at all for a wobble in the gusty air funnelling between the buildings. Godefroy had to line up perfectly, hold the aircraft dead level, and commit \u2014 because once inside the arch, there is no going around.<\/p>\r\n<p>He made it. The aircraft flashed through the opening and out the other side over the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es, and a cameraman on the ground caught the whole thing on film \u2014 which is why, more than a century later, we can still watch it happen.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 22px;\">The stunt that became legend<\/h2>\r\n<p>Because it was seen as an act of pride on behalf of France\u2019s wartime aviators, Godefroy largely escaped punishment, and the flight passed into legend.
