Sin insignias, sin marcas de escuadr\u00f3n, sin gris. Simplemente un feo verde metalizado de punta a punta.<\/p>\n\n<p>Casi todos los aviones que hayas visto pasaron por esa etapa. La soluci\u00f3n tradicional era la imprimaci\u00f3n de cromato de zinc, que es de color amarillo brillante por s\u00ed sola y se torna verde al a\u00f1adirle negro de humo. El negro de humo no era meramente decorativo: mejoraba la resistencia a la luz ultravioleta, algo importante para un componente que puede permanecer a la intemperie durante meses.<\/p>\n\n<p>Hay una nota a pie de p\u00e1gina desagradable. Los cromatos son cancer\u00edgenos, y los trabajadores de las f\u00e1bricas expuestos a ellos desarrollaron enfermedades pulmonares. La industria opt\u00f3 por formulaciones a base de cromo trivalente y fosfato, que son considerablemente menos peligrosas y, aunque inconvenientemente, algo menos duraderas. Un proceso de pintura puede durar hasta dos semanas en una cabina especializada con ambiente controlado, y las cabinas de pintura se encuentran entre las instalaciones con mayor limitaci\u00f3n de capacidad en todo el sistema de producci\u00f3n. Por lo tanto, vuela la aeronave con la imprimaci\u00f3n puesta, confirma que funciona y solo entonces env\u00edala a la cabina de pintura.<\/p>\n\n<p>En un programa de conversi\u00f3n como el del Wedgetail, la l\u00f3gica es a\u00fan m\u00e1s s\u00f3lida. Ese fuselaje fue desmontado, se le injert\u00f3 una estructura de radar y se volvi\u00f3 a ensamblar. Las marcas de baja visibilidad, como las escarapelas descoloridas y los n\u00fameros de serie casi invisibles en los cazas modernos, existen porque una marca de alto contraste permite que el piloto enemigo la detecte f\u00e1cilmente.
