Las Carreras A\u00e9reas del Campeonato Nacional se anunciaban como el deporte de motor m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido del mundo, y no exageraban. En septiembre de 2023, en el aer\u00f3dromo de Reno-Stead, se celebr\u00f3 su \u00faltimo vuelo.<\/p><p>En la aviaci\u00f3n, nada se le parec\u00eda. Los coches corren en tierra y todo el mundo puede ver la pista completa. Seis clases compartieron el cielo a lo largo de las d\u00e9cadas: \u00e1giles coches de F\u00f3rmula Uno, biplanos, aviones de entrenamiento T-6, jets, pero el p\u00fablico acud\u00eda por los Unlimited. <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/jetflights\/es\/aeronave\/p-51-mustang\/\">Mustangs P-51<\/a>, Los Hawker Sea Fury y los Grumman Bearcat, despojados de todo lo que sus dise\u00f1adores de tiempos de guerra hab\u00edan imaginado, rug\u00edan por el circuito al l\u00edmite del control.<\/p><p>En 2003, el Mustang Dago Red modificado estableci\u00f3 un r\u00e9cord de velocidad ilimitada de 507 millas por hora. El d\u00eda m\u00e1s tr\u00e1gico fue el 16 de septiembre de 2011, cuando un Mustang modificado, apodado Galloping Ghost y pilotado por Jimmy Leeward, de 74 a\u00f1os, se elev\u00f3 bruscamente durante una carrera, volc\u00f3 y se estrell\u00f3 contra la zona de palcos frente a la tribuna principal. Once personas murieron, incluido Leeward, y unas setenta resultaron heridas. Los investigadores determinaron que la p\u00e9rdida de control se debi\u00f3 a una vibraci\u00f3n en el compensador de cola, relacionada con modificaciones no probadas y piezas desgastadas. La ciudad hab\u00eda crecido hacia el aeropuerto; el espacio a\u00e9reo, las exigencias de seguridad y la viabilidad econ\u00f3mica ya no eran viables. Los pilones siguen en pie, los Mustangs siguen corriendo.
