Exactamente uno de ellos escap\u00f3, cruz\u00f3 un oc\u00e9ano y logr\u00f3 regresar a su propio bando para volver a volar. El cautiverio no le sent\u00f3 bien. Escap\u00f3 de un grupo de trabajo en el Distrito de los Lagos y pas\u00f3 varios d\u00edas vagando por las monta\u00f1as antes de ser recapturado.<\/p>\r\n<p>Su siguiente intento fue pura teatralidad. En diciembre de 1940, escap\u00f3 de un campo de concentraci\u00f3n en Swanwick cavando un t\u00fanel junto con otros, mientras el coro del campamento cantaba a pleno pulm\u00f3n. El 21 de enero de 1941, mientras el tren penitenciario atravesaba Ontario, von Werra abri\u00f3 una ventana y se arroj\u00f3 a un banco de nieve. En octubre de 1941, apenas unos meses despu\u00e9s de su regreso, el Bf 109 de von Werra se estrell\u00f3 sobre el Mar del Norte, aparentemente por una falla en el motor.
