Its final form was powered by an Armstrong Siddeley Python turboprop of some 3,500 horsepower, mounted behind the pilot and driving two sets of four-bladed contra-rotating propellers in the nose through a long shaft.<\/p>\r\n<p>On paper it was a powerful torpedo-and-strike aircraft. Hurled off a catapult, the engine often could not cope with the sudden surge and starved of fuel, flaming out at the worst possible instant &mdash; just as the aircraft left the deck with no height and no speed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The Python did not appreciate the sudden acceleration it experienced when launched from a catapult, causing fuel starvation and often flaming out on take-off.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>From documented accounts<\/strong> &mdash; of the Wyvern&rsquo;s launch failures<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>That is exactly what happened to Lieutenant Macfarlane. Public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>For all its troubles, the Wyvern did see combat. During the Suez operation of 1956, Wyverns flew ground-attack strikes from the carrier HMS Eagle. One was shot down by anti-aircraft fire; its pilot ejected and was rescued from the sea.<\/p>\r\n<p>It was a brief front-line career. By 1958 the Wyvern was gone, overtaken by pure jets and never much mourned.
