Not because a deal is close &mdash; it is not &mdash; but because of who is doing the looking.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The talks, by every account, are informal and preliminary. There is no commitment, no order, and no word of confirmation from Singapore's defence ministry. It is now one of only two heavyweight sixth-generation efforts in the world, alongside America's NGAD. The three partners aim to field a stealthy, long-range, sensor-fused successor to the Eurofighter Typhoon and Japan's F-2 in the mid-2030s.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Singapore is not short of modern hardware. It already flies the F-35 &mdash; both the F-35A and the short-takeoff F-35B &mdash; putting it firmly inside the stealth club. But its <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/jetflights\/es\/aeronave\/f-16-fighting-falcon\/\">F-16<\/a> fleet is expected to start bowing out from the mid-2030s, and the question every serious air force is now asking is what comes after fifth generation. It is a low-commitment seat at the table &mdash; a way to study the technology, the timeline and the industrial terms without signing up to buy anything. For a country that spends years evaluating a purchase before committing, that is exactly the sort of door it likes to keep ajar.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;From this news, it appears they may have identified a future requirement for a sixth-generation fighter, although this is unlikely to transition into a program of record for at least another two decades.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Roy Choo<\/strong> &mdash; Defence journalist<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also a strategic subtext. A European-Japanese fighter offers a hedge &mdash; a source of top-tier airpower that is not tied solely to Washington.
