Almost nobody says Handley Page Halifax. Yet the Halifax flew tens of thousands of sorties, did jobs the Lancaster couldn&rsquo;t, and gave its crews a far better chance of coming home alive. In all, 6,178 were built. But the head of Bomber Command, Air Chief Marshal Arthur &ldquo;Bomber&rdquo; Harris, never warmed to it &mdash; the Lancaster carried a bigger bomb load, and that was the number Harris cared about.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-rL6MxlleQU\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Arthur Harris described the Halifax as inferior to the rival Lancaster &hellip; though this opinion was not shared by many of the crews that flew it.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>The National Interest<\/strong> &mdash; on the Halifax<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The jack-of-all-trades<\/h2>\r\n<p>Where the Lancaster was a superb bomb-truck and little else, the Halifax could turn its hand to almost anything. It towed the Horsa and Hamilcar gliders that carried airborne troops into Normandy and Arnhem &mdash; a job it did better than the Lancaster thanks to steadier low-speed handling.
