We must dramatically accelerate our program schedules and expand our production capacity now.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Steve Feinberg<\/strong> &mdash; U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense, in the memo<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the memo was genuine, but framed it as part of a longer-running effort rather than a panic. He said working directly with industry to accelerate production is nothing new, and tied the push to the next defense budget.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;[The memo] will inform the fiscal year 2028 budget submitted to Congress for funding, and it is entirely consistent with our ongoing push to rebuild the defense industrial base.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Sean Parnell<\/strong> &mdash; Chief Pentagon spokesman<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The numbers behind the urgency<\/h2><p>The reason for the hurry is arithmetic. The war with Iran chewed through interceptors at a rate peacetime planners never budgeted for. The Army is said to have burned through most of its long-range strike inventory, principally ATACMS and the newer Precision Strike Missile, while separate estimates put THAAD interceptors well below pre-war levels too. Thin magazines force hard choices: hold fire to conserve, or shoot and hope the factories catch up.<\/p><h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A wartime footing<\/h2><p>The memo is the paperwork behind a broader scramble. The Pentagon says it has reached framework agreements with BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin and Honeywell to expand munitions output, and the White House has pulled defense executives into meetings to push production higher. Officials have even floated invoking the Defense Production Act.<\/p><p>President Trump has publicly downplayed talk of shortages.
