These aircraft promise tailless all-aspect stealth, artificial intelligence, adaptive engines, and the ability to command swarms of loyal-wingman drones. The prize is air dominance for the middle of this century.

But 2026 has scrambled the map. America is building two of them, China is already flying two, and Europe — which was supposed to field two rival jets of its own — has just watched one of its programmes collapse in a very public divorce. Here is where every major sixth-generation fighter stands, and how the alliances behind them have shifted.

Embed this scorecard on your site:

<iframe src="https://migflug.com/jetflights/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2026/08/sixth-generation-fighter-programs-scorecard.html" width="100%" height="520" style="border:0" title="Sixth-generation fighter programs"></iframe>

Informations clés

United States: Boeing F-47 (NGAD) plus the Navy’s F/A-XX

UK, Italy, Japan: GCAP / Tempest — in service targeted for 2035

France, Germany, Spain: FCAS / NGF — the fighter was cancelled in June 2026

China: J-36 and J-50 — flying prototypes since December 2024

Russia: PAK DP / MiG-41 — still a concept

The big shift: Europe’s two-jet plan became one as FCAS broke apart

What “Sixth-Generation” Actually Means

There is no official rulebook, but the emerging consensus points to a handful of features. Sixth-generation fighters aim for even lower observability than the F-35 — often by dropping vertical tails entirely — combined with very long range, adaptive-cycle engines that trade efficiency for thrust on demand, and deep sensor fusion driven by AI. Crucially, they are designed from the start to fly alongside cheaper uncrewed “collaborative combat aircraft”, acting as a quarterback for a formation of drones. Some may even be optionally crewed.

A deep dive into the American and Chinese sixth-generation contenders.

America: F-47 and F/A-XX

The United States is furthest along in the West. In March 2025 the Air Force picked Boeing to build the F-47, its Next Generation Air Dominance fighter, and the company is now assembling a first prototype in St. Louis with a maiden flight targeted for 2028 and service in the early 2030s. It is expected to be a tailless, twin-engine design that will eventually replace the F-22 Raptor in the air-superiority role.

The US Navy is running a parallel programme, F/A-XX, to give its carriers a stealthy long-range strike fighter. That contest — between Boeing and Northrop Grumman — is expected to produce a winner imminently. Between them, the two American jets anchor the Western effort.

China: Two Jets Already in the Air

China’s approach has been the surprise of the decade. Since December 2024 it has openly flown two sixth-generation prototypes: the large, three-engine, tailless Chengdu J-36, and the smaller twin-engine Shenyang J-50, which appears oriented toward carrier operations. Both have iterated fast — new airframes and reshaped intakes appearing within months — and Beijing is thought to be aiming to field an operational sixth-generation fighter before 2030.

In pure hardware terms, that arguably puts China ahead: its demonstrators have been flying in daylight for a year and a half while the F-47 is still on the bench. China already operates the fifth-generation J-20 in numbers.

China already flies the fifth-generation J-20; its sixth-generation J-36 and J-50 have been airborne since 2024. On one side sat GCAP, the Global Combat Air Programme, uniting Britain, Italy and Japan. On the other sat FCAS, the Future Combat Air System, joining France, Germany and Spain around a Next Generation Fighter led by Dassault and Airbus. For years the worry was that Europe was splitting its money and industry across two competing jets.

Then FCAS broke. In June 2026, after nine years and no prototype, France and Germany effectively ended the fighter side of the programme, unable to resolve a bitter dispute over who would lead it. Dassault had pushed for a dominant share of the work — reportedly up to 80% — arguing it was the most experienced fighter-builder in the room. The requirements clashed too: France needs a nuclear-capable, carrier-compatible jet; Germany does not.

“The decision makers — the states — were the ones to decide, and the idea was to make that decision on the basis of who was the ‘best athlete’.”
Éric Trappier — CEO, Dassault Aviation

The fallout has redrawn Europe’s map. Germany, already buying the F-35, has walked away from the joint fighter and is widely expected to drift toward GCAP. France looks set to pursue a next-generation fighter more on its own terms, and has been reported exploring new partners including India. Spain is left searching for a role. The full story is in our report on the FCAS cancellation.

Le Eurofighter Typhoon is the jet GCAP and FCAS were both meant to replace. Now only GCAP survives. Photo: Wikimedia Commons

GCAP: Europe’s Last Sovereign Sixth-Gen

With FCAS gone, GCAP is now the only sovereign European sixth-generation fighter left standing. In July 2026 the three partners signed a £4.6 billion contract naming Edgewing — a joint venture of Britain’s BAE Systems, Italy’s Leonardo and Japan’s JAIEC — as the single engineering prime, kicking off detailed design. Britain has committed £8.6 billion in its latest defence plan, a flying demonstrator is due in the air in 2027, and the finished fighter — which, unlike most rivals, keeps large tails — is aimed at entering service in 2035.

“The Global Combat Air Programme has been designed with allies and partners at its heart, and interoperability at the centre of its development.”
Lord Coaker — UK Minister of State for Defence

That openness matters, because GCAP has left the door ajar for new members. With FCAS in ruins, it is being watched closely by Saudi Arabia, Singapore and possibly even Germany. The details of the trinational deal are in our story on the £4.6 billion GCAP contract.

A first look at the GCAP future fighter, shown at Farnborough 2026.

Russia and the Others

Russia, for all its rhetoric, has no sixth-generation aircraft flying. Its Su-57 remains a fifth-generation type, and its next-generation ideas — the PAK DP interceptor, sometimes called MiG-41 — are still concepts on paper. Elsewhere, ambitious programmes like India’s AMCA, South Korea’s KF-21 and Turkey’s KAAN are genuinely impressive, but they are fifth-generation fighters, not sixth.

The New Map

Add it all up and the picture is very different from a year ago. The credible sixth-generation efforts now come down to the United States, China, and a single unified European programme in GCAP — with France pursuing its own path and Russia trailing. The dream of a neat Franco-German-led European fighter is gone; the future of Western air power is being written in Washington, in a BAE hangar in Lancashire, and, increasingly, in Chengdu.

The jets themselves are still years from frontline service. The alliances behind them, however, have already been decided — and 2026 is the year they changed.

Sources: Boeing; BAE Systems; French Ministry of the Armed Forces; FlightGlobal; Breaking Defense; Janes; 19FortyFive; Aerospace Global News.

Articles similaires

Europe’s €100bn FCAS Fighter Just Died

China’s J-50 Stealth Fighter Caught Flying Again

The world’s air forces are racing to build the fighter that will replace the stealth jets of today — the so-called sixth generation.
