Ilan Ramon was the youngest and lowest-ranking pilot in the group. He helped build the navigation plan &mdash; and drew the hardest job of all: flying the eighth and last jet, the most vulnerable position, the last to roll in and drop his bombs on the reactor dome after the enemy was fully alerted.<\/p>\r\n<p>He came home. Selected as Israel's first astronaut, he launched aboard Space Shuttle Columbia on 16 January 2003 for a 16-day science mission. He treated the flight as something larger than himself. Ramon was 48. A man who had survived the most dangerous seat in a legendary raid was lost not to enemy fire, but to a fragment of foam and the brutal physics of coming home from space.<\/p>\r\n<p>His legacy in Israel is immense &mdash; the son of a survivor who flew for his country in war and in peace, and who chose, at the very edge of the world, to carry the memory of the murdered with him. Some pilots are remembered for what they destroyed.
