Il en r\u00e9sulta l&#039;un des appareils les plus \u00e9tranges jamais utilis\u00e9s par le pays\u00a0: un chasseur avec le moteur \u00e0 l&#039;arri\u00e8re, l&#039;empennage \u00e0 l&#039;avant et un surnom que personne chez Curtiss n&#039;osait prononcer en soci\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p><p>Le Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender volait la queue en avant. L&#039;h\u00e9lice propulsait le pilote par l&#039;arri\u00e8re\u00a0; une petite gouverne de profondeur \u00e9tait fix\u00e9e \u00e0 l&#039;avant\u00a0; les d\u00e9rives verticales \u00e9taient plac\u00e9es aux extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s des ailes. Trois constructeurs r\u00e9pondirent avec des appareils \u00e0 h\u00e9lice propulsive\u00a0: Vultee avec le XP-54, Northrop avec le XP-56 et Curtiss avec l&#039;avion qui devint le XP-55.<\/p><p>La logique technique \u00e9tait imparable. Placer l&#039;h\u00e9lice \u00e0 l&#039;arri\u00e8re permettait de d\u00e9gager le nez pour les canons et d&#039;offrir une visibilit\u00e9 optimale vers l&#039;avant\u00a0; concevoir une aile en fl\u00e8che avec des d\u00e9rives \u00e0 ses extr\u00e9mit\u00e9s, transformait la cellule en une seule surface portante. Ce fut \u00e9galement le premier chasseur Curtiss \u00e0 \u00eatre \u00e9quip\u00e9 d&#039;un train d&#039;atterrissage tricycle. L&#039;arm\u00e9e commanda trois v\u00e9ritables prototypes en juillet 1942. Le premier vola le 19 juillet 1943, pilot\u00e9 par J. Harvey Gray, et \u00e9quip\u00e9 cette fois d&#039;un moteur Allison V-1710 de 1\u00a0275 ch.<\/p><p>Un d\u00e9tail du cockpit trahissait l&#039;inqui\u00e9tude des concepteurs\u00a0: un levier permettant au pilote de larguer l&#039;h\u00e9lice avant de s&#039;\u00e9jecter, afin d&#039;\u00e9viter d&#039;\u00eatre percut\u00e9 par son propre moteur au passage. Le moteur s&#039;arr\u00eata\u00a0; toute reprise moteur fut impossible. Il chuta de pr\u00e8s de 5\u00a0000 m\u00e8tres avant de pouvoir sauter en parachute. Mais le 27 mai 1945, lors de la cl\u00f4ture du septi\u00e8me meeting a\u00e9rien de la Guerre \u00e0 Wright Field, \u00e0 Dayton, cet appareil a \u00e9t\u00e9 perdu de la pire des mani\u00e8res. Apr\u00e8s un passage en formation basse, flanqu\u00e9 d&#039;un P-38 Lightning et d&#039;un\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/jetflights\/fr\/aeronef\/p-51-mustang\/\">P-51 Mustang<\/a>, Le pilote William Glasgow a tent\u00e9 un tonneau lent, a perdu de l&#039;altitude et s&#039;est \u00e9cras\u00e9 sur des v\u00e9hicules occup\u00e9s sur une autoroute voisine. Lors des essais, le XP-55 s&#039;av\u00e9ra plus lent et plus difficile \u00e0 piloter que les chasseurs conventionnels produits par milliers sur les cha\u00eenes de production am\u00e9ricaines. Fin 1944, la question \u00e9tait r\u00e9gl\u00e9e\u00a0: les avions \u00e0 r\u00e9action allemands et britanniques \u00e9taient op\u00e9rationnels et le Lockheed XP-80 \u00e9tait en pr\u00e9paration.
