The National Championship Air Races billed itself as the world&rsquo;s fastest motorsport, and it was not exaggerating. In September 2023, at Reno-Stead Field, it flew for the last time.<\/p><p>Nothing else in aviation was quite like it. Cars race on the ground and everyone can see the whole track. Six classes shared the sky over the decades &mdash; nimble Formula One racers, biplanes, T-6 trainers, jets &mdash; but the crowds came for the Unlimiteds. These were <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/jetflights\/fr\/aeronef\/p-51-mustang\/\">P-51 Mustangs<\/a>, Hawker Sea Furies and Grumman Bearcats, stripped, clipped and boosted far beyond anything their wartime designers imagined, thundering around the course at the ragged edge of control.<\/p><p>In 2003 the modified Mustang Dago Red set an Unlimited record of 507 miles an hour. The jet class went faster still. The darkest day came on 16 September 2011, when a heavily modified Mustang called the Galloping Ghost, flown by 74-year-old Jimmy Leeward, pitched up during a race, rolled and dived into the box-seating area in front of the main grandstand. Eleven people died, including Leeward, and some seventy were injured. Investigators traced the loss of control to flutter in a tail trim tab, tied to untested modifications and worn hardware. It remains one of the worst airshow disasters in American history.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"display:flex;justify-content:center;margin:2em 0\"><blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" data-embed-height=\"500\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/aviation\/comments\/16lddja\/midair_collision_of_2_t6s_ends_the_reno_air_races\/\">Midair collision of two T-6s ends the Reno Air Races<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\r\n<p>Even the farewell was touched by grief. On the final Sunday in September 2023, two T-6 Texans collided after their race, killing pilots Nick Macy and Chris Rushing. The remaining races were cancelled. The city had grown out toward the airport; the airspace, the safety demands and the economics no longer fit. In March 2023 the Reno Air Racing Association announced that year would be the last at Stead.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The National Championship Air Races have become synonymous with Reno, and while we are disappointed that this will mark our final year at the Reno-Stead Airport, we are proud the past ten Air Race events have attracted more than one million spectators.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Fred Telling<\/strong> &mdash; Chairman &amp; CEO, Reno Air Racing Association<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"display:flex;justify-content:center;margin:2em 0\"><blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" data-embed-height=\"500\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/aviation\/comments\/11my5el\/its_the_end_of_an_era_this_year_is_the_last_time\/\">It&rsquo;s the end of an era: the last Reno Air Races<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\r\n<p>The races did not die. After a nationwide search, they found a new home at Roswell, New Mexico &mdash; open country with room to breathe &mdash; and flew there for the first time in September 2025. The pylons still stand, the Mustangs still run.
