It was never built, its central sum was wrong, and it was decades ahead of anything that could actually fly. His doctoral thesis on rocket-powered flight was rejected by his Vienna university as too fanciful; a professor told him bluntly that spaceflight was no way to earn a degree.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;If you try, today, to take your doctor degree in spaceflight, you will most probably be an old man with a long beard before you have succeeded in obtaining it.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Sanger&rsquo;s professor<\/strong> &mdash; at the Technische Hochschule, Vienna<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>He switched topics, got his doctorate, and kept working on rockets anyway. In 1935 he lost his job and went into debt to publish his own book on the subject. Undeterred, he wrote a line that became his motto.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Nevertheless, my silver birds will fly!&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Eugen Sanger<\/strong> &mdash; 1935<\/div><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Skipping across the sky<\/h2>\r\n<p>With Bredt handling the mathematics, Sanger worked out the concept in detail. A rocket-powered sled would fling the flat-bottomed craft down a two-mile track. Its own engine would then boost it to the rim of space at close to orbital speed. Along the way he made a genuine engineering leap: he was among the first to propose cooling a rocket engine by circulating its own fuel around the nozzle &mdash; a technique real rockets still use today.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0cvxLA8v1gY\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The fatal miscalculation<\/h2>\r\n<p>The Silbervogel was one of several ideas floated for the Nazi &ldquo;Amerika Bomber&rdquo; project, but the Air Ministry backed proven technology instead. Sanger and Bredt got no further than wind-tunnel tests before the war ended. Postwar analysts rechecking the mathematics found an error: the heat load during that first, fastest skip back into the atmosphere would have been far higher than Sanger and Bredt calculated. Built to their figures, the Silver Bird would have burned up on its very first bounce.<\/p>\r\n<p>And yet the idea would not die. Sanger&rsquo;s skip-glide concept fed directly into America&rsquo;s Dyna-Soar spaceplane project, fascinated Stalin enough to order his own study of it, and lent its designer&rsquo;s name to a 1980s German space-shuttle proposal.
