Two American aircraft, tangled together seven miles up, came apart in a ball of fire &mdash; and four hydrogen bombs tumbled toward their village.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>None of the bombs went off as designed. But two split open on impact, and in the dust that drifted across the fields was plutonium. What followed was one of the strangest episodes of the Cold War: a superpower on its hands and knees in a Spanish fishing village, searching the seabed for a missing weapon and the soil for an invisible poison.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f5f5f5;padding:20px 22px;margin:24px 0;border-radius:8px;border:1px solid #e5e5e5\"><p style=\"margin:0 0 10px;font-weight:700;font-size:18px\">Informations cl\u00e9s<\/p><ul style=\"margin:0;padding-left:20px;line-height:1.8\"><li><strong>Date:<\/strong> 17 January 1966, over Palomares, Almer\u00eda, Spain<\/li><li><strong>A\u00e9ronef:<\/strong> a B-52G bomber and a KC-135 tanker collided during aerial refueling at 31,000 ft<\/li><li><strong>Mission:<\/strong> Operation Chrome Dome &mdash; a continuous airborne nuclear alert<\/li><li><strong>Victimes:<\/strong> all 4 aboard the tanker and 3 of the 7 on the bomber were killed<\/li><li><strong>The weapons:<\/strong> four B28 thermonuclear bombs, each with a yield of about 1.1 megatons<\/li><li><strong>Aftermath:<\/strong> two bombs scattered plutonium on land; a fourth fell into the sea and took 80 days to find<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">All Hell Breaks Loose<\/h2>\r\n<p>Le <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/jetflights\/fr\/aeronef\/b-52-stratofortress\/\">B-52G Stratofortress<\/a> had flown from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina, tracing the long loop of Operation Chrome Dome toward the edge of Soviet airspace and back. The mission demanded two refuelings over Spain. On the second, at around 10:30 a.m., the bomber slid in behind a KC-135 tanker out of Mor\u00f3n Air Base &mdash; a routine every crew had flown a hundred times.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;We came in behind the tanker, and we were a little bit fast, and we started to overrun him a little bit. There was no call for a break away, so we didn\u2019t see anything dangerous about the situation. But all of a sudden, all hell seemed to break loose.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Major Larry G. Messinger<\/strong> &mdash; B-52 pilot, recalling the collision<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The refueling boom struck the top of the bomber, broke a longeron and tore off its left wing. The tanker, its full fuel load igniting, was gone in an instant, killing all four men aboard. The B-52 broke apart. Four of its seven crew managed to bail out; three did not. One was found nearly intact in a dry riverbed within a day. But the conventional explosives packed around the cores of the other two detonated on impact &mdash; not a nuclear blast, but enough to blow open the casings and scatter plutonium dust across roughly two and a half square kilometres of farmland on a brisk winter wind.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7uKLmeGOOhQ\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To calm a terrified public &mdash; and a furious Spanish government &mdash; the U.S. ambassador Angier Biddle Duke and Spain\u2019s information minister Manuel Fraga staged a photo op that has never been forgotten: in March, the two men waded into the sea at Palomares and went for a swim in front of the world\u2019s press, insisting the water was perfectly safe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"display:flex;justify-content:center;margin:2em 0\"><blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" data-embed-height=\"500\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/todayilearned\/comments\/w74vts\/til_in_1966_the_united_states_air_force_lost_4\/\">TIL the U.S. lost four hydrogen bombs over Palomares in 1966<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The cleanup was enormous. Around 1,750 tons of contaminated soil were sealed into barrels and shipped to a burial site in South Carolina. Photo: U.S. government<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Bomb at the Bottom of the Sea<\/h2>\r\n<p>The fourth bomb was the nightmare. It had fallen into the Mediterranean and simply vanished. The only clue was a local fisherman, Francisco Sim\u00f3 Orts &mdash; forever after known as &ldquo;Paco el de la bomba,&rdquo; Bomb Paco &mdash; who had watched it splash down under a parachute. The U.S. Navy assembled a fleet and, using a then-radical technique called Bayesian search theory, calculated the most probable resting places on the seabed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>It took 80 days. The deep-diving submersible Alvin finally located the bomb on a steep undersea slope nearly 900 metres down. An early attempt to raise it failed and the weapon slipped back into the dark. At last, an unmanned recovery vehicle called CURV snagged its parachute, and on 7 April 1966 the bomb was lifted, dripping, onto the deck of USS Petrel &mdash; the first time in history a lost nuclear weapon had been recovered from the deep ocean.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The thing salved off Palomares was a thermonuclear bomb, the same bomb valued by no less an authority than the Secretary of Defense at $2 billion&mdash;each percent of which is, of course, $20 million.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Dr. John P. Craven<\/strong> &mdash; Chief Scientist, U.S. Navy Special Projects, who led the undersea search<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Bomb Paco, reasoning that maritime law grants a salvage award to whoever finds a lost vessel, hired a lawyer &mdash; a former U.S. Attorney General, no less &mdash; and claimed a share of the bomb\u2019s value. The Air Force quietly settled out of court. Among the Navy divers on the recovery was Carl Brashear, who lost part of his leg in a deck accident during the operation and went on to become the Navy\u2019s first African-American master diver, later immortalised in the film <em>Men of Honor<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vJyf_M611cw\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Bombs That Changed the Rules<\/h2>\r\n<p>Palomares, and a near-identical crash over Greenland two years later, made the airborne-alert programme politically impossible. Spain banned American aircraft carrying nuclear weapons from its skies, and Operation Chrome Dome was wound down for good. The idea of keeping armed hydrogen bombs permanently aloft had finally met a village that paid the price for it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Six decades on, Palomares still has no monument &mdash; only a street named &ldquo;17 January 1966.&rdquo; The tomatoes still grow. And somewhere in the paperwork of two governments, the accounting for that clear winter morning is, remarkably, still not quite closed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-style:italic;color:#777;font-size:14px\">Sources: Wikipedia; John P.
