Between November 1942 and May 1943 she and her crew flew 25 daylight missions over Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands &mdash; around 148 hours in the air, more than 60 tons of bombs dropped, and, by the end, virtually every major part of the aircraft replaced at least once from battle damage.<\/p><p>Pilot Captain Robert Morgan named her for his sweetheart, Margaret Polk of Memphis, and had a pin-up &ldquo;Petty Girl&rdquo; painted on the nose. The truth is a little more crowded: she was actually the third B-17 to reach 25 missions over Europe, and other Fortresses like the Hell&rsquo;s Angels got there around the same time. What made the Belle first was what came next &mdash; she was the first to be pulled off combat and flown home to the United States, crew and all, to tour the country and sell war bonds.<\/p><p>It was a public-relations masterstroke. A battered but intact bomber and ten young men who had beaten the odds gave a war-weary home front exactly the story it needed.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6U7mFCPQLxY\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The film that made her immortal<\/h2><p>What turned the Belle from one lucky crew into an icon was a movie. The Hollywood director William Wyler &mdash; already famous, and soon to make <em>The Best Years of Our Lives<\/em> &mdash; went up in the bombers himself with hand-held colour cameras to film the raids as they happened. It was staggeringly dangerous work, and the footage he brought back was unlike anything audiences had seen.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Messerschmitts and Focke-Wulfs coming at you, and you would try to get all this on film. I could never get one explosion &mdash; because how the hell do you know where one is going to explode? Once the cloud is there it is too late.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>William Wyler<\/strong> &mdash; Director, on filming aboard the B-17s<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>His 1944 documentary, <em>The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress<\/em>, put civilians inside a bomber under fire for the first time. It was watched by millions and remains one of the most powerful pieces of wartime filmmaking ever made. She was rescued, displayed for decades in Memphis, and finally given a full restoration.
