Il 27 agosto 1940, un&#039;elegante macchina a forma di cilindro si libr\u00f2 in cielo sopra Milano senza alcuna elica visibile, e l&#039;autorit\u00e0 aeronautica mondiale lo registr\u00f2 puntualmente come il primo volo riuscito di un aereo a reazione. Fu un trionfo dell&#039;ingegneria fascista, ampiamente pubblicizzato dai cinegiornali.<\/p><p>In un certo senso, era anche una bella menzogna. Il Caproni Campini N.1 non era affatto un vero aereo a reazione. Tuttavia, non disponeva di un turbogetto. Costru\u00ec invece un &quot;motore a reazione&quot;, un ibrido in cui un normale motore a pistoni Isotta Fraschini da 900 cavalli, integrato nella fusoliera, azionava un compressore che spingeva l&#039;aria attraverso un condotto, dove una camera di combustione forniva la spinta finale.<\/p><p>In un certo senso funzion\u00f2. Ma era pesante, complicato e consumava molto carburante, e produceva solo circa 725 kg di spinta, sufficienti per una velocit\u00e0 massima di appena 375 km\/h, inferiore persino a quella dei caccia a elica che avrebbe dovuto rendere obsoleti. Per un certo periodo, l&#039;Italia detenne uno dei primati pi\u00f9 importanti dell&#039;aviazione. Poi la verit\u00e0 sull&#039;He 178 venne a galla e il primato cambi\u00f2 silenziosamente di mano. Nel giro di pochi anni, i veri turboreattori di Frank Whittle e Hans von Ohain resero per sempre obsoleto l&#039;ingegnoso ibrido di Campini.
