In the pre-dawn dark of 21 November 1970, a joint Army–Air Force strike force punched 23 miles into North Vietnam, straight past Hanoi’s densest air defenses, to hit a small prison camp called Son Tay where dozens of Americans were believed to be dying of torture and starvation.

Everything worked. A helicopter crash-landed by design into the tiny courtyard, its blades shredding forty-foot trees. Green Berets poured out and cleared every cell block in minutes against complete surprise. Then came the words no one had rehearsed for: the cells were empty. The prisoners had been moved months earlier.

The raiders flew home in stunned silence, having executed a perfect operation for nothing. Yet history would come to call Son Tay a “successful failure” — because what happened inside those empty walls changed the fate of every American POW in North Vietnam.

Informazioni rapide

Data

21 November 1970 (early hours)

Objective

Rescue American POWs at Son Tay, 23 miles west of Hanoi

Commanders

Brig. Reconnaissance flagged Son Tay, on the Song Con River, as holding perhaps sixty prisoners in urgent need — the planning figure was around 61, with estimates ranging from the mid-fifties to seventy.

President Nixon wanted options. What the Pentagon proposed was audacious: land an assault force in the enemy’s backyard, clear the camp, and be gone before Hanoi could react.

The CIA scale model “Barbara,” used to rehearse the raid down to the last building. Gunships raked the guard towers; one HH-3E slammed deliberately into the courtyard, sacrificing itself so the assault team could land inside the walls. The plan called for exactly that.

One helicopter briefly set down at a similar-looking compound nearby, where the raiders won a sharp firefight — a contingency they had drilled. Surprise, everywhere, was total. Not one raider was killed.

“We’re Americans. The POWs had been relocated months earlier, most likely after flooding fouled the camp’s wells, to another site closer to Hanoi. The raiders had trained for everything except an empty prison.

Within about twenty-seven minutes it was over. The force lifted out and turned for home, every man accounted for, and every cell empty behind them.

How the raiders arrived to find the camp empty.

The Failure That Saved Lives

Despite freeing no one, the raid rattled Hanoi into consolidating scattered prisoners into central jails like the “Hanoi Hilton.” For the first time in months, men had cellmates. Treatment eased, mail and parcels began arriving, and organized prison life — classes, church services, medical aid — became possible.

Above all, the prisoners learned that their country had risked a strike in Hanoi’s own backyard to reach them. Morale soared. The perfect raid had rescued no one, and changed everything.

“The Son Tay rescue attempt dispelled all doubt: we were not forgotten; our country cared.”
A repatriated Son Tay-era POW — Recalling the raid’s effect (NMUSAF)

A first-hand account from one of the Son Tay raiders.

Sources: Wikipedia (Operation Ivory Coast); National Museum of the US Air Force, “Rescue Attempt: The Son Tay Raid”; C.
