The fuselage was tall, deep and barely a yard wide, and it reminded him of a piece of luggage. The name stuck for the rest of the aircraft\u2019s life: the Flying Suitcase.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Handley Page Hampden was one of the aircraft that carried Britain into the Second World War &mdash; fast, nimble, and desperately, comically cramped. Its wing was slim and beautifully tapered, giving it a high top speed and light, responsive controls that pilots adored. To keep it fast, Handley Page made the fuselage as narrow as they dared &mdash; and that is where the trouble started.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;It looks like a flying suitcase.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>C. Grey<\/strong> &mdash; founder of The Aeroplane magazine, on first seeing the Hampden prototype in 1936<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>At three feet wide, the fuselage left the four-man crew wedged in single file, unable to move around, unable to swap places, freezing cold and with no facilities whatsoever on missions that could last many hours. One crewman\u2019s description has become the definitive verdict on the aircraft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;A beautiful aeroplane to fly, terrible to fly in! It flew armed reconnaissance from September 1939, and its crews soon discovered a brutal truth: with only a handful of light machine guns, the &ldquo;fighting bomber&rdquo; was hopelessly outgunned by German fighters in daylight. After heavy losses over Norway, Bomber Command sent it into the dark.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eGROodeTG8U\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>By night the Hampden earned its place in history. It laid mines in enemy waters, dropped the first British bombs on German soil, and took part in the first RAF raid on Berlin and the first thousand-bomber raid on Cologne. But it found a remarkable second act with Coastal Command as a torpedo bomber. In one extraordinary operation in 1942, thirty-two Hampdens flew more than two thousand miles from the Shetlands to northern Russia to help protect an Arctic convoy from the battleship Tirpitz &mdash; a punishing journey partly over enemy territory that cost eight aircraft before they even arrived.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"display:flex;justify-content:center;margin:2em 0\"><blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" data-embed-height=\"500\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/WeirdWings\/comments\/1u7edbx\/handley_page_hampden\/\">The Handley Page Hampden on r\/WeirdWings<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The survivors were simply handed over to the Soviet Navy, which flew them on and gave them yet another nickname: the &ldquo;balalaika,&rdquo; after the odd-shaped Russian instrument. But the Flying Suitcase deserves better than a punchline.
