Fission was discovered in Berlin. So why did the bomb come from New Mexico? This part examines the German and Japanese programs \u2014 and the errors, raids and illusions that stopped them.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>The Hardangervidda, Norway, night of 27 February 1943. Nine men in British battledress ski across the largest mountain plateau in northern Europe, in air cold enough to freeze the oil in a rifle bolt. Four of them have wintered up here since October, living in a hut on reindeer meat and Iceland moss scraped from under the snow. Below them, floodlit on its rock shelf above a gorge, stands the Vemork hydroelectric plant: seven storeys of Norwegian industrial concrete, and in its basement the only facility on Earth producing heavy water by the tonne.<\/p>\r\n<p>Heavy water is the reason the plant matters, and the reason it matters is a measurement error made two years earlier in Heidelberg. The nine skiers do not know that. They know only that London considers this basement important enough to have already cost 41 British lives, and that their own orders are to get inside and destroy it. The leader of the assault team, carrying bolt cutters he bought in an ordinary British hardware shop, is 23 years old.<\/p>\r\n<p>This is the story of why Germany \u2014 the country where fission was discovered, with a two-year head start and Werner Heisenberg on staff \u2014 never came close to an atomic bomb. Fission was a Berlin discovery; within months of the Hahn-Strassmann paper, two separate German initiatives \u2014 the second convened by Army Ordnance on 16 September 1939, two weeks into the war \u2014 had organised the country&rsquo;s remaining nuclear physicists into what they called the Uranverein, the Uranium Club. Heisenberg, Nobel laureate at 31 and the most formidable theorist left in the Reich, led the reactor theory. The Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics was placed under military authority.<\/p>\r\n<p>Look closer, though, and the handicaps were already fatal. The purges described in Part 2 had stripped Germany of a quarter of its physicists, including eleven Nobel-class minds. What remained was a program of roughly 70 scientists at its peak \u2014 the Manhattan Project would employ 130,000 people \u2014 split into rival fiefdoms competing for the same scarce uranium and the Reich&rsquo;s wandering attention. Armaments minister Albert Speer, who met the physicists in June 1942, concluded from the F&uuml;hrer&rsquo;s table talk that the project could expect little from the top: Hitler had spoken of atomic bombs, Speer recalled, but the idea quite obviously strained his intellectual capacity, and in June 1942 the program was formally demoted to reactor research \u2014 energy, not weapons.<\/p>\r\n<p>And then there was the graphite error. In January 1941, the respected Heidelberg physicist Walther Bothe measured how far neutrons travel in industrial graphite and got 36 centimetres \u2014 barely half the true value. His graphite, it later emerged, was poisoned by a few parts per million of boron, a neutron-devouring impurity his analysis missed. The conclusion drawn was momentous: graphite could not moderate a German reactor. That left exactly one alternative moderator \u2014 heavy water \u2014 and exactly one industrial source of it: the Norsk Hydro plant at Vemork, in occupied Norway. Fermi&rsquo;s Chicago pile, built with obsessively purified American graphite, would go critical in December 1942 while German physicists were still counting barrels of Norwegian water. Rarely in the history of science has one contaminated measurement carried such freight.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Copenhagen, September 1941<\/h2>\r\n<p>One evening in September 1941, Heisenberg walked through occupied Copenhagen to the institute of his old mentor Niels Bohr \u2014 the man in whose orbit he had invented quantum mechanics. What was said on their private walk has never been established; the conversation ended abruptly, and so, effectively, did the friendship. After the war Heisenberg suggested he had come to hint that German physicists were dragging their feet. Bohr remembered it very differently. The visit intended \u2014 perhaps \u2014 as reassurance had instead delivered the Allies their most authoritative warning that Germany was in the race.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"margin:24px 0\"><div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QrCc9XfNoBE\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;font-style:italic;margin:6px 0 0\">Mark Felton&rsquo;s account of the Alsos Mission: the Allied intelligence hunt for Heisenberg and Germany&rsquo;s atomic secrets.<\/p><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Heavy Water War<\/h2>\r\n<p>London, meanwhile, had decided to remove the Norwegian variable from the equation. The first attempt, in November 1942, was Operation Freshman: two gliders full of Royal Engineers towed across the North Sea toward a frozen landing zone. Both gliders and one tug crashed in appalling weather; 41 men died, the injured survivors executed under Hitler&rsquo;s Commando Order. On the night of 27&ndash;28 February 1943, six Kompani Linge commandos under Joachim R&oslash;nneberg \u2014 dropped onto the plateau eleven days earlier and joined to the four half-starved survivors of the advance party \u2014 descended into the gorge the Germans considered impassable, crossed the frozen river, climbed the far wall, and walked along a railway ledge into the plant. The demolition team slipped into the electrolysis basement through a cable duct, held up the elderly Norwegian night watchman \u2014 pausing, at his anxious request, while his irreplaceable spectacles were found \u2014 laid charges on the eighteen high-concentration cells, lit 30-second fuses and walked out. The explosion, muffled by a metre of concrete, sounded from outside like a car crash; a sentry blamed a snow-tripped mine. Over 500 kilograms of heavy water \u2014 the entire accumulated stock \u2014 ran into the drains. Not one shot was fired, on either side. We sat there very tired, very happy.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Joachim R&oslash;nneberg<\/strong> &mdash; leader of Operation Gunnerside, recalling the raid; he died in 2018 aged 99<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"max-width:550px;margin:0 auto 28px\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=1833264188052898069&theme=light\" style=\"width:100%;height:400px;border:none;border-radius:12px;overflow:hidden\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p>Five of the raiders then skied 320 kilometres to Sweden in fourteen days \u2014 R&oslash;nneberg later called it the best skiing weekend he ever had \u2014 while some 3,000 German soldiers beat the plateau behind them. The Germans repaired the cells within months, so in November 1943 the Americans sent 143 B-17s against Vemork in daylight. The bombs barely touched the heavy water but killed 22 Norwegian civilians, and persuaded Berlin to evacuate the remaining stock to the Reich. It never arrived. On 20 February 1944, a Linge saboteur named Knut Haukelid placed a time-bomb in the bilge of the lake ferry Hydro; it sank in Lake Tinn&rsquo;s deepest water with the last drums aboard. Photo: public domain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Cave Under the Church<\/h2>\r\n<p>By early 1945 what was left of the German program had retreated, with Berlin burning, to the Swabian village of Haigerloch, where the physicists assembled their final reactor in a beer cellar carved into the cliff beneath the castle church: 664 uranium cubes hung on chains in a tank of 1.5 tonnes of heavy water. Designated B-VIII, it managed a neutron multiplication factor of about 0.85 \u2014 a self-sustaining reaction requires 1.0 \u2014 and calculations later showed it needed to be half again as large. In its best month, Germany&rsquo;s atomic project stood roughly where Fermi had stood in mid-1942.<\/p>\r\n<p>Behind the advancing Allied armies came the Alsos Mission \u2014 a scientific intelligence unit whose chief, the Dutch-born physicist Samuel Goudsmit, hunted his old colleagues&rsquo; laboratory while privately mourning parents murdered in the Holocaust. Alsos reached the Haigerloch cave on 23 April 1945 and took it apart; 659 of the 664 uranium cubes were dug out of a ploughed field beside the church, and the heavy water was found in barrels in a mill cellar. The parish priest talked the engineers out of dynamiting the cave under his church. Heisenberg, who had left by bicycle, was captured at his alpine cabin on 3 May. Goudsmit&rsquo;s verdict on the enterprise he had feared for five years: a program defeated by its own bureaucracy, its persecutions, and its leadership.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Farm Hall<\/h2>\r\n<p>The victors then performed one of history&rsquo;s great scientific experiments on the scientists themselves. Ten of them \u2014 Heisenberg, Hahn, von Laue, Diebner and six others \u2014 were interned in an English country house near Cambridge called Farm Hall, its rooms wired with hidden microphones. On the evening of 6 August 1945, their British minder told them the BBC was reporting an atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.<\/p>\r\n<p>The transcripts of that evening are unsparing. Otto Hahn, the man who had split the atom, was shattered, saying he felt personally responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths; he was steadied with gin. Walther Gerlach retired to his room and was heard sobbing. And Heisenberg \u2014 who had told his colleagues a bomb would need tons of uranium-235 \u2014 refused at first to accept the news at all.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t believe a word of the whole thing. All I can suggest is that some dilettante in America who knows very little about it has bluffed them.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Werner Heisenberg<\/strong> &mdash; Farm Hall transcripts, evening of 6 August 1945<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Within days he had reworked the calculation and lectured his fellow prisoners on a broadly correct critical mass of tens of kilograms \u2014 proof, historians have noted, that the German program had never seriously done the arithmetic in wartime. The prisoners then began composing the more comfortable legend: Carl Friedrich von Weizs&auml;cker&rsquo;s suggestion that the physicists had not built the bomb because, on principle, they had not wanted to. Hahn&rsquo;s recorded reply deserves to be quoted wherever that legend appears: I don&rsquo;t believe that, but I am thankful we didn&rsquo;t succeed.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Tokyo&rsquo;s Phantom Bomb<\/h2>\r\n<p>Japan&rsquo;s program was smaller still, and its story shorter. Its central figure, Yoshio Nishina \u2014 a warm, revered physicist who had studied under Bohr in Copenhagen and built Asia&rsquo;s first cyclotrons at the Riken institute \u2014 was asked by the Army in 1941 to study the feasibility of a uranium weapon. His Ni-Go project pursued isotope separation by thermal diffusion in Riken&rsquo;s Building 49; the Navy, refusing to share, ran its own F-Go effort in Kyoto around a paper design for an ultracentrifuge. Between them they never separated a usable gram of uranium-235. The Army project&rsquo;s budget was a rounding error against the Manhattan Project&rsquo;s two billion dollars; Japan had no uranium ore worth mining, and the submarine U-234, dispatched from Germany in 1945 with 560 kilograms of uranium oxide aboard, surrendered to the US Navy when the Reich collapsed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" style=\"margin:0 0 24px;width:100%\"><img data-opt-id=263909331  decoding=\"async\" class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/ml5psubhxdln.i.optimole.com\/cb:0AsB.cabc\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/ig:avif\/https:\/\/migflug.com\/jetflights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/08\/yoshio-nishina-riken-1939.png\" alt=\"Yoshio Nishina at the Riken institute in 1939\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;max-width:100%;display:block;border-radius:6px\"><figcaption style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;margin-top:6px;font-style:italic\">Yoshio Nishina at Riken, 1939. In the spring 1945 incendiary raids on Tokyo \u2014 the campaign Part 8 of this series will describe \u2014 Building 49 and the thermal diffusion apparatus burned, and by June Nishina had wound the project down. On 7 August 1945 the Army flew him to a city the morning cables described only as destroyed by a new kind of bomb. Nishina circled the ruins of Hiroshima, recognised precisely what he was looking at, and wired Tokyo the confirmation. Not for one reason but by a cascade: the exiled talent, the poisoned graphite, the divided fiefdoms, leaders who could not grasp what they were declining to fund \u2014 and, at the decisive moment, nine men on skis.
