Piggyback Plane That Beat the Atlantic

In the 1930s the Atlantic was aviation’s unconquered ocean. Airships had crossed it, but no commercial heavier-than-air machine could carry paying cargo the whole way in a single hop. The physics was brutally simple: a flying boat heavy enough with fuel to reach America was too heavy to lift off the water in the first place.

Short Brothers’ answer looked like something a child had drawn — one aeroplane riding pickaback on another. A stubby four-engined mailplane sat bolted to the broad back of a flying boat, and together they staggered into the sky on eight engines. Then, high over the water, they came apart.

On 21 July 1938 that strange stack did what no airliner had managed before: it flew mail nonstop from Ireland to Canada. This is the story of the piggyback plane that beat the Atlantic.

The Problem the Ocean Posed

Short Brothers already built the Empire “C-Class” flying boats that stitched together Britain’s imperial air routes. But the Atlantic defeated them. To carry enough fuel for the crossing, they had to strip out the passengers and mail that made the trip worth flying at all.

The core issue was the takeoff. An aircraft can stay airborne carrying far more weight than it can lift off the ground or water under its own power. A machine fuelled for two thousand miles of open ocean simply could not unstick from the sea.

What was needed was a way to get a fuel-laden aircraft into the air without asking it to take off on its own. That is precisely the loophole Robert Mayo set out to exploit.

Mayo’s Pickaback Idea

Major Robert Mayo, Technical General Manager at Imperial Airways, proposed mounting a small, heavily loaded long-range seaplane on top of a larger carrier aircraft. Both would pool their power to haul the pair up to altitude; then they would separate, the carrier turning for home while the upper aircraft flew on. The Air Ministry backed the scheme.

Co-designed by Mayo and Shorts’ chief designer Arthur Gouge, the composite paired the S.21 Maia — an Empire boat modified with a pylon on its back — and the four-engined, twin-float S.20 Mercury, crewed by a pilot and a navigator and able to carry a useful load of mail.

Separation was carefully choreographed. Locks held the two aircraft together and could only be released once balance instruments showed the upper component was properly trimmed. The very first successful in-flight separation came on 6 February 1938.

The Atlantic Crossing and Don Bennett

On 21 July 1938, Maia — flown by Captain A.S. Wilcockson — took off carrying Mercury and Captain Don Bennett. After a leg out to Foynes on Ireland’s Shannon Estuary, the composite launched for the ocean.

Mercury separated at around eight in the evening and set out west into the prevailing headwinds — the hard direction across the Atlantic. Bennett brought her down near Montreal after roughly twenty hours and twenty minutes in the air, having covered 2,930 miles. It was the first commercial nonstop east-to-west crossing by a heavier-than-air machine.

The calibre of the man in the cockpit is underlined by what came next: Don Bennett went on to command the RAF’s Pathfinder Force in the Second World War, rising to Air Vice-Marshal.

The Long Reach to South Africa

Fitted with extra tankage to stretch her range, Mercury went hunting for records. Between 6 and 8 October 1938 she was launched over Dundee, in Scotland, and flew nonstop to Alexander Bay, at the mouth of the Orange River in southern Africa.

The distance — 6,045 miles — set a world long-distance record for a seaplane, again with Bennett at the controls. A bronze plaque on the Tay Embankment at Dundee still marks the spot where she lifted away.

Why the Piggyback Died

For all its cleverness, the composite was a solution the world quickly outgrew. Standard Empire boats were cleared for higher weights, more powerful long-range flying boats arrived, and in-flight refuelling offered another route to Atlantic range without the complication of a second aircraft.

Then came the war. Maia was destroyed by German bombing in Poole Harbour in May 1941; Mercury was broken up the same year so her aluminium could feed the war effort. Only one composite had ever been built.

The idea never entirely vanished, though. Decades later the same principle — a small vehicle launched at altitude from a larger one — would reappear in the Boeing 747 that ferried the Space Shuttle, and in air-launched rockets. Mayo’s odd stack was ahead of its time.
