Lasers Arrive in Europe to Kill Drones

The cheapest weapon on a modern battlefield is a drone you can buy online. The U.S. Air Force has just answered it in Europe with one of the most futuristic: a laser. Quietly, and at locations it will not name, U.S. Air Forces in Europe has fielded the Compact Laser Weapon System — a directed-energy gun that can burn a drone out of the sky for the price of the electricity it takes to fire.

The move, confirmed at the end of July, is the sharp end of a much bigger shift. Air bases used to worry about enemy jets and missiles. Now they worry about swarms of small, cheap, hard-to-see machines that can loiter over a runway, map the defences, or dive into a parked aircraft.

No single silver bullet

The laser does not work alone. USAFE-AFAFRICA describes a layered net: sensors detect and track an intruder, operators in a base defence operations centre use the laser's optics to confirm it is actually a hostile drone — not a friendly aircraft, not a bird — and only then do the effectors come out. Those range from jammers that sever the link between a drone and its pilot, up through directed energy, to kinetic interceptors that physically knock the thing down.

Alongside the laser, the command has tested a ground-based interceptor called the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System — a laser-guided 2.75-inch rocket that can reach a drone up to about six kilometres away. The philosophy is deliberately mixed: no one tool beats every threat.

Why now

The urgency comes from the East. The war in Ukraine has shown how commercial and military drones alike can reach airfields and supply hubs far behind the front. And the probing has already crept west: between August 2024 and February 2026, the International Institute for Strategic Studies counted hundreds of Russian drones manoeuvring in the airspace of NATO members — including near bases that store U.S. nuclear weapons — apparently mapping vulnerabilities and testing how the alliance reacts. Moscow denies involvement.

That is the calculus a laser is built to fix. A Shahed-type attack drone can cost a few tens of thousands of dollars; shooting one down with a million-dollar missile is a losing trade repeated a hundred times a night. A laser reverses the maths — the shot is nearly free, and the magazine is as deep as the generator behind it.

The safe haven is gone

Lasers are not magic. Cloud, rain and dust sap a beam, and a single emitter can only engage one target at a time. That is exactly why the Air Force is bolting them into a wider web rather than betting the base on them. But the message from Europe is clear: the rear-area airfield, long treated as a sanctuary, is now a place that has to defend itself — and it will do it, increasingly, with light.
