The JATM is built to claw that advantage back. Almost every hard number about it &mdash; range, seeker, motor &mdash; is classified, which tells you plenty on its own.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Australia will bolt it first onto the <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/fa-18-super-hornet\/\">F\/A-18F Super Hornet<\/a>, then onto the <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-35-lightning-ii\/\">F-35 Lightning II<\/a> and the EA-18G Growler electronic-attack jet. Pitch Black is Australia&rsquo;s premier international air-combat exercise, drawing air forces from across the Indo-Pacific and Europe. Announcing a beyond-visual-range missile buy in front of that audience is a message as much as a purchase.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;This announcement is the latest milestone in the delivery of long-range, high-tech capabilities for our Defence Force.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Richard Marles<\/strong> &mdash; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Behind the diplomacy is a plain strategic calculation. Australia, like the United States, is racing to hold an edge in long-range air combat against a region where airpower is advancing fast. Deliveries are not expected until 2033. The JATM is still ramping up even for the U.S. military, and export customers sit behind American squadrons in the queue. So this is a commitment to a capability years away, not a weapon rolling onto the flight line next month.
