NextGen, the predecessor programme, ran for 20 years and spent over $14 billion. Independent audits repeatedly found the agency could not credibly answer basic questions about cost, schedule, or completion status. Congressional hearings descended into shouting matches over whether towers were &#8220;on track&#8221; or &#8220;two years behind&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Modern Skies tracker tries to short-circuit that cycle. The tracker covers more than 10,000 modernisation projects, with an interactive map searchable by state and project type, and a local search that shows what has been completed \u2014 and what is due next \u2014 for any city, airport code or ZIP code. The FAA says the dashboard will be updated monthly.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What&#8217;s Actually Being Replaced<\/h2>\n<p>The numbers behind the dashboard are sobering. The FAA still operates more than 90 air traffic control facilities housing equipment from the late 1960s and 1970s \u2014 gear that requires custom-fabricated replacement parts because the original manufacturers no longer exist.<\/p>\n<p>Modern Skies replaces all of it. In the first urgent batch, the Department of Transportation has committed over $835 million \u2014 more than $750 million to replace eight ageing control towers and TRACONs with brand-new facilities, plus $85.8 million to upgrade federal contract towers at 41 more airports. Behind that comes a fleet-wide swap of legacy En Route radars, an overhaul of the host computer system that processes flight strips, and a new cybersecurity layer that finally puts ATC traffic behind modern encryption.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Test: Will the Dashboard Still Be Honest in 18 Months?<\/h2>\n<p>For now, the tracker is being welcomed as a genuine step toward transparency. The project information is detailed, and the promise is that slips will be flagged rather than buried.<\/p>\n<p>The real test comes when the politically inconvenient slips start landing. If a single high-profile tower project slips badly on the public dashboard, will the FAA show the delay, or quietly revise the baseline so it disappears?<\/p>\n<p>Modern Skies will succeed or fail on more than just engineering. It will succeed if the agency is willing to make its own bad news public \u2014 and use that public scrutiny as a forcing function.
