At its core sits a computer-driven, command-post simulation, generals and staffs fighting a notional war on screens, wrapped in real combined field training with troops, armour, ships and aircraft. Around 18,000 South Korean personnel drill alongside U.S. forces, United Nations Command and partner nations, rehearsing how the alliance would actually fight. The script normally runs in two acts: a defensive phase, then a counterattack phase. The entire second phase, the counterattack operations, was scrapped, South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back said. Combined field manoeuvre training was pared back, with the allies still haggling over the details. The Pentagon said associated live-training events were reduced, with certain events cancelled or converted to simulations, while insisting there would be no degradation to U.S. training objectives. Which is a tidy way of saying: we deleted the live part, but the PowerPoint is fine.<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The aviation angle<\/h2>\r\n<p>Here is where it bites. UFS is an air show as much as a ground game. Past editions have put U.S. Air Force F-16s from the 51st Fighter Wing at Osan, plus F-35s and F-22s, into the sky beside Republic of Korea Air Force F-35As, F-15K Slam Eagles and FA-50 Golden Eagles, combined counter-air of the kind you cannot fake in a briefing room. When live training gets converted to simulations, sorties are the first thing to hit the cutting-room floor, and deferred live-fly means deferred reps for the pilots who would fly the first night of a real war. It also lands as Pacific Air Forces boss Gen. Kevin Schneider is already auditing his command&rsquo;s 45-plus annual exercises for which ones are genuine readiness gainers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aupnHR8IBNA\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why Trump pulled it<\/h2>\r\n<p>The order arrived, as these things now do, via social media. Trump told the allies to substantially reduce their drills, citing the cost, his very good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and his view that the exercises are inappropriate and hostile toward a country he says has been respectful on his watch. The directive was unilateral; South Korea&rsquo;s foreign minister told parliament that neither Seoul nor U.S. officials had advance warning. As we covered when Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/jetflights\/trump-cuts-us-south-korea-military-drills-2026\/\">first moved to cut the Korea war games and hail Kim<\/a>, the through-line is a summit he wants badly, possibly this autumn.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Trump is trying to catch three birds with one stone here.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555;text-align:left\"><strong>Ellen Kim<\/strong> &mdash; Senior fellow, Korea Economic Institute of America<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">How Seoul and Pyongyang played it<\/h2>\r\n<p>Seoul kept its composure. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the allies had agreed to partially adjust the exercise period and scale at Washington&rsquo;s suggestion, and President Lee Jae Myung stressed the drills were defensive and never aimed at provoking the North. Pyongyang, predictably, was unimpressed either way. State media branded the allies warmongers, and the North had already lobbed short-range ballistic missiles into the sea on 6 and 12 August, its usual overture to exercise season. Then Kim Jong Un&rsquo;s sister delivered the shrug.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The provocative, aggressive nature of the drills won&rsquo;t change even though their duration and size were reduced.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555;text-align:left\"><strong>Kim Yo Jong<\/strong> &mdash; Vice department director, Workers&rsquo; Party of Korea<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What it signals<\/h2>\r\n<p>Strip away the choreography and this is readiness being used as a bargaining chip. Trump wants a Kim summit and is willing to trade combined training reps for a photo op and a diplomatic opening. Beijing, which loathes the alliance&rsquo;s exercise calendar, is quietly delighted. And Seoul is left with an awkward question hanging over its long-sought transfer of wartime operational control: how do you certify a combined command that keeps having its biggest rehearsal cut in half? Five days of Ulchi Freedom Shield bought a lot of goodwill in Pyongyang.
