But make no mistake: the quiet arrival of N64321 from Hamburg is one of the most consequential fleet moves in American aviation this year.<\/p>\n<p>This is United&rsquo;s first Airbus A321XLR &mdash; the longest-range single-aisle airliner ever built &mdash; and the first of fifty. It makes United the second U.S. carrier to operate the type, after American Airlines introduced it last year. And it begins the long-promised retirement of an aircraft United has leaned on for transatlantic flying since the 1990s: the Boeing 757.<\/p>\n<p>Why Tampa, of all places? That&rsquo;s where the jet gets its Starlink antenna fitted before entering service. The 150-seat layout is remarkably premium-heavy: twenty Polaris business class suites arranged 1-1, every seat with direct aisle access and a sliding privacy door. That&rsquo;s a configuration you&rsquo;d normally find on a widebody.<\/p>\n<p>Behind Polaris sits a proper Premium Plus cabin &mdash; the first time United has put its premium economy product on a single-aisle aircraft &mdash; followed by Economy Plus and standard economy, with the largest seatback screens United has ever installed in coach. The XLR carries fewer people, burns dramatically less fuel per seat, and sells a far higher share of premium cabin &mdash; exactly where transatlantic profit lives.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The 757&rsquo;s Long Goodbye<\/h2>\n<p>For three decades, the Boeing 757 has been the quiet workhorse of United&rsquo;s thin transatlantic network &mdash; the only narrowbody with the legs to connect East Coast hubs to Europe. But the youngest of them are now pushing 25 years old, and Boeing never built a successor.<\/p>\n<p>Airbus did. The A321XLR&rsquo;s permanent rear centre tank gives it up to 4,700 nautical miles of range &mdash; enough to reach deep into Europe, North Africa, and South America from United&rsquo;s hubs. Aer Lingus proved the concept with Dublin&ndash;Raleigh; American has been flying its XLRs since December. Now the world&rsquo;s largest transatlantic carrier joins the game with the biggest XLR order of any U.S. airline.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What Happens Next<\/h2>\n<p>First comes the Starlink installation in Tampa, then crew familiarisation flying &mdash; likely on domestic routes &mdash; before the type ventures across the Atlantic.
