In just three meters of shallow sea, searchers recovered the Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden-Kai—”Violet Lightning”—a Japanese fighter that had been lost to the waves for 81 years. The aircraft’s silhouette was unmistakable: graceful elliptical wings, the distinctive canopy, the sleek fuselage of one of Imperial Japan’s most formidable warbirds. After more than eight decades submerged, the Shiden-Kai is coming home.

This is not simply salvage. This is resurrection. The Shiden-Kai that rose from the sea off Akune City represents a chance to recover a piece of aviation history that has been inaccessible to the world since April 1945. Led by local preservation expert Eisuke Himoto and his dedicated team, the recovery operation successfully raised an aircraft in remarkably intact condition—a testament to both the robustness of pre-war Japanese engineering and the careful stewardship of those who refused to let history slip away.

What makes this recovery extraordinary is its rarity. Only four authentic Shiden-Kai aircraft exist in museums worldwide: two in the United States, two in Japan. This recovered example would be the fifth—and the first with a direct, unbroken connection to its final combat mission.

Quick Facts

Aircraft

Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden-Kai (“Violet Lightning”)

Allied Name

George

Recovery Date

April 8, 2026

Location

Off Akune City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan

Depth

3 meters (few hundred meters offshore)

Time Underwater

81 years (lost April 1945)

Pilot

Captain Hayashi

Surviving Examples

Only 4 in museums worldwide (this is the 5th)

The Last Flight of Captain Hayashi

The Shiden-Kai’s story is one of desperate defiance in the waning months of the Pacific War. In April 1945, Captain Hayashi was at the controls when Allied forces struck. B-29 Superfortress bombers—the long-range American heavy bombers that haunted Japanese commanders—were the target. The Shiden-Kai was born to fight these machines, but on this mission, the odds proved insurmountable. Hayashi’s aircraft was damaged in combat, its systems failing, its wings ragged from battle. With nowhere else to go, he brought the fighter down in a controlled emergency landing in shallow water off the Kagoshima coast.

Hayashi survived. His aircraft did not—or so the world believed. For eight decades, the Shiden-Kai rested on the seafloor, waiting for someone to remember it was there. Most recovered warbirds come from crash sites or deliberate searches for known wrecks. This one emerged because a handful of dedicated preservationists refused to accept that Japanese aviation history was permanently lost to the sea.

Why the Shiden-Kai Matters

To understand the significance of this recovery, you must understand what the Shiden-Kai represented in the final chapter of Japanese aviation history. It was fast—capable of 370 mph in level flight with a supercharged Homare engine. It was agile, with a wing design that gave it exceptional turn performance. It was dangerous: armored cockpit, self-sealing fuel tanks, and a punch of firepower that could shred American fighters.

The Shiden-Kai was the ultimate expression of Japan’s attempt to neutralize American air superiority. It evolved from the N1K1 Kyofu (“Rex”), an ungainly floatplane fighter, into a sleek, single-engine land-based interceptor. Naval designers took a fundamentally compromised design and somehow transformed it into an aircraft that could match the Vought Corsair and Grumman Hellcat—two of the most feared fighters in the Pacific theater. Pilots who flew against the Shiden-Kai respected it. Some feared it.

By April 1945, however, fuel was scarce, training was abysmal, and the machines produced by Japanese industry were increasingly thrown against opponents with seemingly unlimited resources. The Shiden-Kai was brilliant. But brilliance could not overcome exhaustion, attrition, and the weight of industrial defeat.

The remarkably intact Shiden-Kai emerges from Kagoshima Prefecture waters after 81 years submerged

A Fragile Resurrection

The recovered airframe bears the marks of its long submersion. Corrosion has claimed much of the aluminum skin. Salt water has worked on every surface, every rivet, every mechanical component. Yet the overall structure is surprisingly graceful—the elliptical wing platform still elegant, the fuselage contours unmistakable even under decades of marine patina. This is not a skeleton. This is an aircraft.

Eisuke Himoto, who led the recovery effort, understands what this moment means. “We want future generations to see the real thing,” he said. “To understand history through something tangible.” It’s a philosophy that resonates in the world of aviation preservation. Museums matter. Archives matter. But standing in front of an actual machine that was flown by actual pilots, that saw actual combat, that experienced actual history—that touches something that photographs and documents cannot reach.

The path forward involves careful conservation and painstaking restoration. This will not be a flying restoration—the Shiden-Kai will never take to the air again. Instead, it will become a public exhibit, a window into Japanese aviation design, engineering, and the desperate improvisation of late-war aircraft development. It will sit in a museum, and visitors will look at it and think about Captain Hayashi, about the pilots who loved and feared it, about the moment when this machine’s war ended in the shallow water of the Seto Inland Sea.

The Ghost Comes Home

Aviation archaeology often works this way: you follow a hunch, you gather a team, you dive into cold water and dark history. Sometimes you find nothing. Sometimes you find wreckage—scattered parts, bent metal, no story left to tell. And sometimes—rarely—you find an aircraft that has been waiting 81 years to be remembered. The Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden-Kai that rose from the sea off Akune City is more than a salvage job or a curiosity. It’s a recovered voice from history, and it finally has the chance to speak again.

Sources: Secure World Foundation reports on Japanese aviation preservation efforts; historical records of B-29 operations in Kagoshima Prefecture, April 1945; aviation heritage documentation on Kawanishi fighter development and the N1K series evolution.

On April 8, 2026, a ghost emerged from the waters off Japan’s Kagoshima Prefecture.
