After training at several French flying schools, Bullard earned his pilot's brevet on May 5, 1917, becoming the first African American to qualify as a military pilot. He was assigned to Escadrille Spa.93, a fighter squadron flying the SPAD S.VII, one of the best Allied fighters of the war.\n\nBullard flew at least twenty combat missions over the Western Front, engaging German aircraft in the chaotic, swirling dogfights that defined aerial warfare in 1917. His time in the cockpit was relatively brief \u2014 he was eventually grounded after a dispute with a French officer \u2014 but his achievement was historic. A Black man from Jim Crow Georgia had become a fighter pilot and flown combat missions, something the United States military would not allow a Black American to do for another twenty-six years.\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">America Says No<\/h2>\n\nWhen the United States entered World War I in April 1917, Bullard applied to transfer to the U.S. Army Air Service. He was rejected. The American military did not accept Black pilots \u2014 a policy that would persist until the Tuskegee Airmen broke the barrier during World War II. Bullard remained with the French for the rest of the war.\n\nThe rejection was not bureaucratic. It was deliberate. Dr. Edmund Gruenfeld, a medical officer attached to the American Expeditionary Forces, examined Bullard and declared him physically unfit to fly \u2014 despite the fact that he was already a qualified combat pilot who had been flying missions for months. The real reason was his race.\n\nBullard returned to Paris after the armistice, where he ran a nightclub in Montmartre that became a gathering place for jazz musicians, artists, and expatriates. During World War II, he worked with the French Resistance before fleeing to Spain and eventually returning to the United States.\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A Country That Forgot Him<\/h2>\n\nBullard spent his final years in New York City, working as an elevator operator in Rockefeller Center.
