We have written before about the F-8 Crusader's legendary status as the \"Last of the Gunfighters\"<\/a> \u2014 the Navy jet that went to war over Vietnam armed primarily with four 20 mm Colt Mk 12 cannon when every other fighter in the fleet was transitioning to missiles. That story is worth reading if you have not already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the Crusader's combat record deserves a deeper look \u2014 not just because the numbers are impressive, but because the men who flew it into the most intense aerial combat since Korea embodied a philosophy of air fighting that the Pentagon had tried very hard to kill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MiG Killers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Between 1966 and 1968, F-8 Crusaders of the US Navy shot down 19 enemy aircraft over North Vietnam \u2014 18 MiG-17s and one MiG-21. Against this, the Navy lost three Crusaders in air-to-air combat. That gives the F-8 a kill ratio of roughly 6:1 \u2014 the best of any American fighter type in Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The F-4 Phantom, by comparison, managed a kill ratio of approximately 2.4:1 in Navy service and just 2:1 with the Air Force. The Phantom was newer, faster, carried more missiles, and had a more powerful radar. It also cost twice as much. And it could not dogfight worth a damn \u2014 at least not until TOPGUN taught its crews how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Crusader's superiority in air combat was not an accident. It was the direct result of three factors: the aircraft's exceptional manoeuvrability, its built-in cannon armament, and the culture of the pilots who flew it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Variable-Incidence Wing \u2014 and Why It Mattered<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The F-8's most unusual feature was its variable-incidence wing \u2014 a design solution so elegant and so strange that no other production fighter has used it before or since. The entire wing could pivot upward by seven degrees relative to the fuselage, increasing its angle of attack for takeoff and landing without tilting the nose up to the point where the pilot could not see the carrier deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was not just a landing aid. The variable-incidence wing gave the Crusader lower approach speeds than any other Navy fighter of its era \u2014 critical for operations from the smaller Essex-class carriers that could not handle the heavier, faster F-4 Phantom. It also contributed to the aircraft's outstanding low-speed handling, which in turn made it a natural dogfighter at the medium altitudes and moderate speeds where Vietnam-era air combat actually took place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wing also gave the Crusader a remarkably clean aerodynamic profile in flight. With the wing level, the fuselage sat at a slight nose-down attitude that reduced drag and gave the pilot excellent forward visibility \u2014 a seemingly minor advantage that mattered enormously when trying to spot a silver MiG-17 against a grey sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

October 1962: The Photos That Stopped a War<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before Vietnam, the Crusader had already played a role in the most dangerous moment of the Cold War. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, it was not F-8 fighters but RF-8A Crusader reconnaissance aircraft \u2014 unarmed photo variants stripped of their guns and loaded with cameras \u2014 that provided the low-level photographic evidence confirming the presence of Soviet nuclear missiles on Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While U-2s flying at 70,000 feet had first detected the missile sites, the high-altitude imagery was not detailed enough for definitive analysis. On 23 October 1962, RF-8As from VFP-62 flew the first low-level reconnaissance missions over Cuba at treetop height and Mach 0.95 \u2014 close enough to photograph individual missile transporters, launch rails, and the faces of Soviet technicians looking up in alarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These photographs \u2014 known as \"Blue Moon\" missions \u2014 gave President Kennedy the incontrovertible proof he needed to confront Khrushchev. The RF-8A pilots flew without weapons, without escorts (initially), and without any certainty that the Cubans and Soviets would not open fire. Several aircraft returned with damage from ground fire. None were lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pilots' Fighter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

More than any performance statistic or combat record, what defined the Crusader was the relationship between the aircraft and the men who flew it. In an era when the Pentagon was convinced that missiles had made dogfighting obsolete \u2014 when the F-4 Phantom was designed without an internal gun, and pilots were being trained as systems operators rather than fighter pilots \u2014 the Crusader community kept the old faith alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F-8 pilots practised air combat manoeuvring when it was unfashionable. They studied the performance envelopes of Soviet fighters when the official doctrine said close-in combat would never happen. They maintained their gunnery skills when the Navy was telling them to trust the Sparrow missile \u2014 a weapon with a kill probability so low that the joke was \"the Sparrow only works in PowerPoint.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the air war over North Vietnam proved that missiles were unreliable, that MiGs could and would close to visual range, and that the ability to manoeuvre and shoot was still the fundamental skill of a fighter pilot \u2014 the Crusader community was vindicated. The lessons learned from F-8 combat were directly incorporated into the TOPGUN programme established at NAS Miramar in 1969. Every modern fighter pilot, in every air force on earth, owes something to the men who refused to let dogfighting die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Crusader was retired from US Navy service in 1976. The French Navy flew theirs until 1999 \u2014 the last military operator of a jet that, in retrospect, was the purest expression of what a fighter aircraft is supposed to be: a machine built to find the enemy, get close, and kill him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
