Its Dreamliners were fine. But the Trent 1000 engines that power them have been a global headache for years &mdash; durability problems mean the engines need overhauls far more often than planned, and the world\u2019s repair shops simply couldn\u2019t keep up. With spare engines unavailable, airlines faced an absurd situation: perfectly good aircraft with nothing to hang under the wings.<\/p>\n\n<p>At the worst point, five of Air New Zealand\u2019s fourteen 787-9s were grounded &mdash; more than a third of its long-haul Boeing fleet. Long-term parking is scarce in Auckland and New Zealand\u2019s damp climate is unkind to stored jets, so the grounded Dreamliners went to the dry desert air of Alice Springs. Then, rather than letting engines sit idle on parked wings, the airline sent teams into the outback to pull them off and feed them into the overhaul pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Carrying out engine changes in Alice Springs was a significant logistical challenge, but it helped us get engines into the shop at least six months earlier than if they had remained on the aircraft.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Robert Cox<\/strong> &mdash; Fleet Project Lead, Air New Zealand<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It worked. One by one the Dreamliners came home, and with ZK-NZD\u2019s return the storage line at Alice Springs is empty &mdash; at least of Air New Zealand widebodies.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Growth Mode, Finally<\/h2>\n\n<p>With the full fleet flying, the airline is shifting from damage control to expansion: a completed cabin retrofit programme, two factory-fresh 787-9s arriving by the end of the year, and new routes linking Christchurch with Singapore, Tokyo and Perth.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;As the country\u2019s national airline our focus isn\u2019t just growth; it\u2019s building a resilient, future-fit airline that keeps New Zealand connected to the world. The era of the perfectly healthy airline fleet, it seems, isn\u2019t quite back.
