The hard part is doing it without killing anyone.<\/p><p>Three F-16s arrived at Eglin in 2024 and 2025 to be rebuilt into testbeds under VENOM-AFT, handed to the 96th Test Wing and the 53rd Wing. The jets began flying again in June to prove they were still airworthy after the modifications. Ross Elder<\/strong> &mdash; VENOM developmental test lead, Eglin AFB<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The human never leaves the loop<\/h2><p>The word the Air Force keeps repeating is &ldquo;human-on-the-loop.&rdquo; It means a pilot is always present, watching the algorithms work and holding the authority to start or stop any one of them in real time. VENOM is not about empty cockpits &mdash; not yet.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;There will never be a time these VENOM aircraft will solely fly by itself.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Col. The faster the Air Force can prove an autonomy behaviour is safe on a crewed F-16, the faster it can trust that same code on an uncrewed one. Gagnon has described the goal as &ldquo;speed-to-ramp&rdquo; &mdash; going as fast as is safely possible so the drones that follow arrive sooner.<\/p><h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why a 1970s fighter is teaching tomorrow\u2019s drones<\/h2><p>VENOM feeds directly into the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, the fleet of cheap, semi-autonomous drone wingmen the Air Force wants flying alongside the <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-35-lightning-ii\">F-35<\/a> and the future F-47. Every lesson the F-16 testbeds return &mdash; how an AI handles a merge, a formation, a weapons pass &mdash; is a lesson the CCAs inherit.<\/p><p>The groundwork was laid by DARPA\u2019s ACE program and its X-62A VISTA jet, which in September 2023 flew the first-ever within-visual-range dogfight between an AI-controlled F-16 and a human-flown one. VENOM takes that proof of concept and turns it into a repeatable production line for autonomy testing on ordinary front-line jets.<\/p><p>Two years ago this was PowerPoint and simulation. This week it was a grey Fighting Falcon climbing away from Eglin, flying itself, with a human along for the ride. The robots are not replacing the pilot yet.
