They buy aircraft by the hundred and rent them to the airlines that do, which makes them some of the most powerful buyers in the industry. A single lessor order can anchor years of a manufacturer\u2019s production line, and SMBC\u2019s backlog already runs deep on both sides of the Atlantic.<\/p><p>That is what makes this contest so telling. SMBC is not a flag carrier making an emotional choice; it is a hard-nosed financier betting on which jet its airline customers will want to lease through the 2030s. The MAX is the latest evolution of Boeing\u2019s venerable 737, a design first flown in the 1960s and squeezed, re-engined and refined ever since. The A320neo builds on Airbus\u2019 younger, wider-bodied single-aisle, and that extra cabin width has become a quiet selling point with passengers and cabin crews alike.<\/p><p>Both promise roughly a fifth less fuel burn than the previous generation, thanks to new engines, sharklets or winglets, and aerodynamic tuning.
