Out went the two modest J85 engines; in went a single General Electric F404 \u2014 the same class of engine as the F\/A-18 Hornet\u2019s \u2014 with roughly 60% more thrust. The result transformed the aircraft. Thrust-to-weight jumped past 1.1, the ceiling climbed beyond 55,000 feet, and the jet could go from a cold cockpit to airborne in about 22 seconds.<\/p>\r\n<p>Northrop skipped the designation \"F-19\" entirely, jumping to F-20 \u2014 partly to put clear water between it and the odd-numbered Soviet MiGs, partly for marketing punch. It hired the most famous test pilot alive, Chuck Yeager, to sell it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; margin: 24px 0;\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: 0; border-radius: 8px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F_LK-Gv6iCw\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-no-lazy=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>Yeager did not hold back. Under the Carter administration\u2019s \"FX\" export rules, America wanted a capable fighter it could sell to allies without handing over its most sensitive front-line technology. The Tigershark fit perfectly \u2014 privately funded by Northrop, it could be marketed abroad without exposing the crown jewels.<\/p>\r\n<p>Then the rules changed. The Reagan administration relaxed export policy and let allies buy the real thing: the F-16. Overnight, the F-20\u2019s entire reason to exist evaporated. Why buy a superb export-only fighter when you could have the same jet the US Air Force flew? A promised sale to Taiwan collapsed under the 1982 US\u2013China communiqu\u00e9. Two of the three prototypes were lost in crashes \u2014 both traced to pilot G-induced loss of consciousness during punishing airshow routines, not to any fault in the aircraft. In late 1986, with not a single order on the books, Northrop pulled the plug.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background: #f8f9fa; border-left: 4px solid  #1565c0; padding: 20px 22px; margin: 18px 0 24px; border-radius: 0 8px 8px 0; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.7; display: flex; gap: 20px; align-items: flex-start;\">\r\n<div><em>\u201cone of the best fighters that never went into production.\u201d<\/em>\r\n<div style=\"margin-top: 10px; font-size: 14px; color: #555;\"><strong>Steve Pace<\/strong> \u2014 aviation historian, in \"X-Fighters\" (2003)<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>The verdict has hardened into legend. The Tigershark was faster to react than an F-16, cheaper to operate, and armed for the beyond-visual-range fight before its rival was. It lost anyway \u2014 beaten not in the air, but in the corridors where export policy is written.
