Two decades before the F-117, its creators were already shaping an aircraft to be invisible to radar — and that idea would outlive the contest it lost.

QUICK FACTS

Role

High-altitude CIA reconnaissance (proposed)

Programme

Project GUSTO / OXCART, 1957–59

Powerplant

2 × Pratt & Whitney J58, buried in the fuselage

Design speed

Mach 3.2

Number built

0 (radar test model only)

Fate

Lost to the Lockheed A-12, 28 August 1959

The race to replace the U-2

After a U-2 proved it could be tracked over the Soviet Union, the CIA launched Project GUSTO to find a successor that radar could not see.
