Without aerial refuelling, fighters cannot reach their targets, bombers cannot loiter, and surveillance platforms cannot maintain coverage. China&#8217;s PLA Rocket Force has developed anti-ship ballistic missiles specifically to push American carriers \u2014 and their supporting tankers \u2014 beyond effective range. In a Pacific conflict, KC-46s orbiting at 30,000 feet in the Philippine Sea would be visible to Chinese over-the-horizon radar and vulnerable to long-range air-to-air missiles launched from J-20 stealth fighters.\n\nThe Air Force&#8217;s solution is not to hide the tankers \u2014 they are too large and non-stealthy for that. Instead, it plans to make them shoot back.\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What the System Looks Like<\/h2>\n\nDetails remain classified, but Air &#038; Space Forces Magazine reports that the system will include both sensors and weapons integrated into the aircraft. The sensors would detect incoming threats \u2014 likely using infrared search and track (IRST) and radar warning receivers \u2014 while the weapons would intercept them at close range.\n\nThe most likely interceptor is a directed-energy system or a small kinetic kill vehicle \u2014 something compact enough to be carried internally without reducing cargo or fuel capacity. The Air Force has been testing laser systems on AC-130 gunships and could adapt that technology for defensive use on larger airframes.\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The HH-60W Gets Lasers Too<\/h2>\n\nThe tanker programme is not the only platform gaining active defences. The Air Force also revealed plans to equip the HH-60W Jolly Green II rescue helicopter with a laser defence system \u2014 and to develop a VIP transport variant for senior military leaders.\n\nArming the support fleet is a recognition that the next war will not have safe rear areas. Every aircraft that flies \u2014 fighters, bombers, tankers, cargo, helicopters \u2014 will operate under threat. The question is no longer whether support aircraft need self-defence.
