That is the kind of loss the current campaign has produced repeatedly since February.<\/p>\r\n<p>The death in Iraq on Saturday was not. Nobody was attacking. An Iranian drone had already been intercepted and brought down, and the hazard that remained was its warhead, sitting in the dirt, waiting to be dealt with by people whose job is to walk towards unexploded ordnance rather than away from it.<\/p>\r\n<p>Explosive ordnance disposal is among the most dangerous work in any military, and it does not stop when the shooting does. It is a separate matter from the Iraq fatality, and conflating the two \u2014 as some coverage has \u2014 produces a casualty count that is simply wrong.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Department of Defense began releasing names on Monday. Defense News reported 18 US service members killed since 28 February. Al Jazeera, reporting a day later and enumerating individual casualties, put the figure at 17.<\/p>\r\n<p>The likely explanation is the recovered remains still being verified in Jordan \u2014 whether they are counted yet, and by whom. Until that examination concludes, the honest answer is at least 17.<\/p>\r\n<p>The most recent previous loss before this weekend came on 1 July, when Commander Gabriel Edwards, commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, was killed as his MH-60S Sea Hawk went down in the Arabian Sea. Three other sailors were rescued.<\/p>\r\n<p>CENTCOM announced the end of a weekend wave of strikes on Monday \u2014 the ninth consecutive night \u2014 and the beginning of a tenth.
