The aircraft was instrumented for structural testing of high-speed, low-level flight \u2014 the mission profile SAC had adopted to evade Soviet radar. Without warning, the bomber pitched up violently, then was hammered by a series of violent vertical jolts.<\/p>\n\n<p>The crew heard a metallic bang behind them. The cabin pressure flicked momentarily. The aircraft yawed hard to the right and started to roll. Fisher took the controls. Nothing in his training told him what came next.<\/p>\n\n<p>Behind the cockpit, almost the entire vertical fin had snapped off at its root. What was left was a stub barely a metre tall \u2014 enough to keep the rudder hardware attached but not enough to provide any meaningful yaw stability. The aircraft was, aerodynamically, two-thirds of a flying wing.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Inventing a New Flight Manual<\/h2>\n\n<p>Modern fighter aircraft have flight control software that can compensate for a lost tail. The B-52H of 1964 had four men, eight throttle levers, and the ailerons. They used differential engine thrust \u2014 advancing the throttles on the right-side engines while pulling them back on the left \u2014 to push the nose left or right, replacing the lost rudder. They used the ailerons for roll control as designed. And they used the fuselage-mounted air brakes as variable drag plates: extending one side more than the other added another tiny yaw input.<\/p>\n\n<p>None of this was in the manual. Fisher and his crew invented it as they flew. Every adjustment had to be made smoothly and slowly \u2014 abrupt inputs would have set up the aerodynamic divergence that the fin was supposed to suppress, and the aircraft would have departed controlled flight in seconds.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Six Hours in the Air<\/h2>\n\n<p>The recovery flight took about six hours. An F-100 Super Sabre chase plane joined up to escort and visually inspect, confirming by radio that almost the entire fin was gone \u2014 a fact he had until then only inferred from the handling. With gusty winds ruling out a landing back at Wichita, the crew diverted to Blytheville AFB in Arkansas and its long runway.<\/p>\n\n<p>The landing was straight-in, slow, and on speed. The aircraft touched down gently, rolled long, and stopped without a single piece of damage on the ground. Fisher climbed out and walked around the back. Almost nothing was left of the tail.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Engineering Aftermath<\/h2>\n\n<p>Boeing studied the wreckage and the flight data closely. The Blytheville incident showed the B-52's clear-air turbulence load envelope was wrong; the fin had failed at loads much lower than the certification figures suggested. Boeing redesigned the fin attachment, increased the load tolerance for production aircraft, and quietly retrofitted the rest of the H-fleet.<\/p>\n\n<p>The aircraft itself, 61-0023, was repaired and returned to service. It flew with the Air Force until 2008, when it was placed in storage at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. Fisher later called the bomber \u201cthe finest airplane I\u2019ve ever flown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>It remains the only known case of a strategic bomber landing intact after losing its entire vertical stabilizer in flight.
