By this summer, it&#8217;ll be calling itself Air Force One. The Air Force announced on May 1 that the &#8220;Bridge&#8221; VC-25B has completed its modification work and all flight testing, and is now in the paint shop ahead of a summer delivery to the Presidential Airlift Group.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:10px;\">This is the stop-gap Air Force One \u2014 a bridge between the creaking VC-25As that have been flying presidents since George H.W. Bush, and the perpetually-delayed next-gen VC-25Bs that Boeing has been promising since roughly the Obama era.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background:#f0f4f8;border-left:4px solid #1a3c5e;padding:18px 22px;margin:28px 0;border-radius:6px;\">\n<strong style=\"font-size:1.08em;\">Quick Facts<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Aircraft: Boeing 747-8i (formerly Qatari head-of-state transport)<br \/>\n\u2022 Modifier: L3Harris, Waco &#038; Greenville, Texas<br \/>\n\u2022 Modification completed in under 12 months<br \/>\n\u2022 New livery: white upper, red &#038; gold accent, dark blue underside<br \/>\n\u2022 Delivery: Presidential Airlift Group, summer 2026<br \/>\n\u2022 Next-gen VC-25B ETA: ~2028\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:25px;\">A Qatar Connection, Straight to the Tarmac<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:10px;\">In 2025, Qatar gifted the US a lavishly outfitted 747-8i. The DoD accepted it in May 2025. Less than a month later, L3Harris was awarded a contract to rebuild the interior to presidential standards. The entire modification and flight-test cycle came in under twelve months. For context, the actual next-gen Air Force One program \u2014 launched in 2016 \u2014 still hasn&#8217;t delivered a single aircraft.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background:#f9f9f9;border-left:4px solid #2a5c8f;padding:16px 20px;margin:24px 0;border-radius:6px;display:flex;align-items:flex-start;gap:16px;\">\n<div><strong>Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink<\/strong><br \/><em>&#8220;By integrating the 747-8i platform now, we are doing more than bridging a gap; we are executing a strategic stand-up of a high-consequence fleet. This platform provides invaluable lead time to mature training pipelines and synchronize supply chains.&#8221;<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:25px;\">Why the Original VC-25As Can&#8217;t Keep Flying<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:10px;\">The two current Air Force Ones entered service in 1990. They&#8217;re based on the 747-200, which Boeing stopped producing in 1991. Spare parts are increasingly hard to source, maintenance costs are climbing, and the avionics are ancient by modern standards.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background:#eef3ff;border-left:4px solid #5c7ea8;padding:16px 20px;margin:24px 0;border-radius:6px;\">\n<strong>Good to Know:<\/strong> The Boeing 747-8i was Qatar&#8217;s version of a flying palace \u2014 staterooms, conference spaces, VIP fitments. Much of that interior was stripped for secure communications gear and mission systems. The 747-8 airframe is the same platform proposed for the permanent next-gen Air Force Ones, meaning pilot training and parts commonality are built-in benefits.\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:25px;\">Summer Can&#8217;t Come Fast Enough<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:10px;\">When the President boards it this summer and the transponder squawks &#8220;Air Force One,&#8221; a 747-8 gifted by Qatar, modified in Texas, and painted in a new American livery will officially become the most famous aircraft in the world \u2014 at least temporarily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:10px;\">History has a way of making the stopgap the story.
