The ceremony marking its completion drew about 300 people to Sacheon, roughly 185 miles southeast of Seoul \u2014 among them the head of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), representatives of some 500 South Korean suppliers, and officials from Indonesia, the program's international partner.<\/p><p>The first mass-production KF-21 is scheduled to reach the Republic of Korea Air Force around September. It reflects a conservative, methodical program \u2014 and it gives export customers a powerful selling point when the competition includes jets with far messier development histories.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The success of the KF-21 is a great feat made possible by the blood and sweat of the program stakeholders and the engineers involved in its development, as well as the support of the entire nation.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Lee Yong-chul<\/strong> &mdash; Commissioner, Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA)<\/div><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What it is \u2014 and what it isn't yet<\/h2><p>The KF-21 is a twin-engine, canted-tail fighter that looks, at a glance, like a slightly smaller cousin of the F-22 and F-35. It is powered by a pair of General Electric F414 engines. But it is not a full fifth-generation stealth aircraft \u2014 at least not yet. Early jets carry their weapons externally rather than in an internal bay, so it sits in the 4.5-generation bracket, with a stealthier, internally-armed evolution planned down the line.<\/p><p>That is the point of the Boramae: a capable, affordable, largely home-built fighter that South Korea controls end to end, rather than importing off the shelf.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ppCXaSReMsE\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p>From a standing start in 2015 to a finished fighter in 2026, with a spotless safety record and a production line spinning up \u2014 that is a serious industrial achievement, and a warning shot to every established fighter exporter.
