No radios. Incomplete maps. Pilots who, in many cases, had been told only minutes earlier where they were going.<\/p><p>This was Operation Bodenplatte &mdash; &ldquo;Baseplate&rdquo; &mdash; the Luftwaffe&rsquo;s largest single air operation of the war, and its most desperate. The plan was simple: hug the ground, cross the front at treetop height, and catch the Allied air forces parked wingtip to wingtip on their forward fields.<\/p><p>For a few violent hours it worked. Then the arithmetic turned monstrous. The Allies would replace their losses within a week. German factories were still turning out aircraft, but the force was starved of fuel and, above all, of trained pilots. Many airmen never fully grasped what they were doing.<\/p><p>Worse, not all German flak crews were let in on the plan. Flight paths crossed heavily defended rocket-launch zones, and roughly a quarter of the attacking units lost aircraft to their own anti-aircraft fire before they ever reached a target.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/txbF0OpCZY4\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p style=\"font-size:14px;color:#777;font-style:italic;text-align:center;margin-top:-12px\">A historian&rsquo;s overview of the operation and its cost.<\/p><h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Dawn Attack on the Airfields<\/h2><p>From around eight in the morning, wave after wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/fw-190\/\">Fw 190s<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/messerschmitt-bf-109\/\">Bf 109s<\/a> &mdash; with a few <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/messerschmitt-me-262\/\">Me 262<\/a> jets &mdash; swept across some seventeen Allied airfields. Fires raced through tightly packed <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/supermarine-spitfire\/\">Spitfires<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/hawker-typhoon\/\">Typhoons<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/p-51-mustang\/\">Mustangs<\/a>.<\/p><p>Yet the execution was ragged. US National Archives.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why It Failed Where It Mattered<\/h2><p>Measured in burned aircraft, Bodenplatte looked like a victory &mdash; somewhere between roughly 250 and 500 Allied machines destroyed, with the most careful modern count around 305 destroyed and 190 damaged.
