Fit a plywood seat, a single control column, and a handful of basic instruments. Now put a young man inside. That was the Fieseler Fi 103R Reichenberg: Germany&rsquo;s manned flying bomb, and one of the darkest ideas in the history of aviation.<\/p>\r\n<p>Officially, the pilot was supposed to steer the weapon onto its target, then bail out at the last moment. In reality, with a roaring pulsejet intake gulping air right behind his head, his chances of getting out alive were estimated at less than one in a hundred. Convinced that a small band of volunteers could trade their lives to sink ships or smash key targets, she pushed a concept she called &ldquo;Operation Self-Sacrifice&rdquo; &mdash; in German, <em>Selbstopfer<\/em> &mdash; and pitched it to Hitler himself in early 1944. The programme was soon given the far blander cover-name Reichenberg, and a special unit, the Leonidas Squadron, was formed to fly it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TFD0alzSeRM\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>What is most chilling is that the volunteers knew exactly what they were signing. The pledge left no room for illusion.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;I hereby voluntarily apply to be enrolled in the suicide group as a pilot of a human glider-bomb.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Reichenberg volunteers&rsquo; pledge<\/strong> &mdash; 1944<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A cockpit in front of a jet engine<\/h2>\r\n<p>Turning a cruise missile into a crewed aircraft was brutally simple. The V-1&rsquo;s guidance gear made way for a cramped cockpit with a plywood bucket seat, set immediately in front of the Argus pulsejet&rsquo;s air intake. Training gliders and two-seat versions were built to teach pilots to fly the thing; the operational Re-4 kept the V-1&rsquo;s one-tonne-class warhead. In a passage later recalled in Otto Skorzeny&rsquo;s memoir, she framed their willingness as devotion rather than fanaticism.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re no lunatics, throwing away our lives for fun. We&rsquo;re Germans with a passionate love of our country, and our own safety is nothing to us when its welfare and happiness are at stake.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Hanna Reitsch<\/strong> &mdash; test pilot, recalled by Otto Skorzeny<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The pilots who never flew a mission<\/h2>\r\n<p>Testing fell largely to Reitsch and fellow pilot Heinz Kensche. The Reichenberg proved vicious to fly and prone to crashing; Reitsch survived several accidents that should have killed her. Senior officers &mdash; above all Werner Baumbach, who commanded the special-operations wing KG 200 &mdash; regarded it as a pointless waste of trained pilots. Together with armaments minister Albert Speer, Baumbach argued to Hitler that deliberate suicide attacks were not part of the German military tradition.
