It did not last. IndiGo &mdash; India\u2019s low-cost giant, and the largest airline in the country by a country mile &mdash; is tearing up its damp-lease deal with Norway\u2019s Norse Atlantic Airways and handing back every one of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners it had borrowed to launch its first intercontinental routes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The arrangement was always a stopgap. IndiGo built its empire on a single-type fleet of narrowbody Airbus jets, and it does not yet own a widebody. To reach Europe before its own long-haul aircraft arrive, it leased Dreamliners &mdash; and their pilots &mdash; from Norse. IndiGo\u2019s Mumbai-Manchester service is being suspended by the end of August, and one of the leased Dreamliners went back to Norse as early as June. IndiGo\u2019s Mumbai-London Heathrow flights will be suspended from late October and will not resume until the airline takes delivery of its own widebodies. In other words, IndiGo is stepping back from its marquee long-haul city rather than keep paying to lease someone else\u2019s aeroplanes to serve it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why the Numbers Stopped Working<\/h2>\r\n<p>IndiGo has pointed to a familiar trio of pressures: fuel, currency and geopolitics. Indian jet-fuel prices climbed sharply through 2026, and every closed corridor of airspace forces long-haul flights onto longer, thirstier routings. On a widebody burning through expensive fuel, those extra minutes add up fast &mdash; and a low-cost carrier lives and dies by unit costs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Leasing compounds the problem. A damp lease is convenient, but it is not cheap, and it leaves an airline paying a premium to fly metal it does not own. For a carrier as cost-obsessed as IndiGo, burning money on borrowed Dreamliners while its own long-haul fleet is still on the assembly line was never going to be a permanent state of affairs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;In line with India\u2019s vision of becoming a global aviation hub and our aspiration to establish ourselves as a leading global aviation player by 2030, IndiGo is taking decisive steps forward.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Pieter Elbers<\/strong> &mdash; CEO, IndiGo, announcing the airline\u2019s A350-900 order (Oct 2025)<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Long-Haul Dream Is Only Paused<\/h2>\r\n<p>None of this means IndiGo is giving up on the world. Far from it. The airline holds a firm order for 60 Airbus A350-900s &mdash; genuine long-haul flagships it says will carry around 330 passengers &mdash; with deliveries due to begin in 2027. The Norse Dreamliners were only ever meant to keep the seat warm until those jets show up.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>So the retreat is really a regrouping. IndiGo is pulling back from the routes that only worked on borrowed aircraft, leaning on the frugal A321XLR where it can, and waiting for the fleet that will let it fly to Europe on its own terms. When the A350s arrive, London will be back on the board &mdash; this time in IndiGo\u2019s own colours.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div
