It is the only installation in the Air Force that holds two legs of the nuclear triad on one property: the 5th Bomb Wing flies B-52H Stratofortresses and the 91st Missile Wing runs 150 Minuteman III silos and their launch control centres scattered across thousands of square kilometres of North Dakota farmland.<\/p>\n<p>That double mission gives the base an unusual rhythm. Missile crews drive out to launch control facilities for multi-day alerts, security forces and UH-1N helicopters cover the field, and the bomber wing flies long sorties over the northern plains. The base has been at the centre of the Air Force nuclear enterprise&rsquo;s troubles and reforms &mdash; the 2007 incident in which six nuclear-armed cruise missiles were flown unwittingly from Minot to Barksdale led to the creation of Air Force Global Strike Command in 2009. Three squadrons &mdash; the 740th, 741st and 742nd &mdash; divide the field into 15 flights, each flight being one buried launch control centre and the ten silos it watches.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">150 launch facilities and 15 launch control centres, spread over about 8,500 square miles of North Dakota.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">03<\/div>\n<h3>The 2007 Bent Spear<\/h3>\n<p>On 29 and 30 August 2007 six AGM-129 cruise missiles carrying live W80-1 nuclear warheads were loaded onto a B-52H at Minot and flown to Barksdale, and nobody in the loading, flying or receiving chain knew. It is the most serious American nuclear custody failure of the post-Cold War era, and it rebuilt the Air Force&rsquo;s nuclear organisation from the top down.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">The six warheads sat outside required nuclear security procedures for about 36 hours.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">04<\/div>\n<h3>&ldquo;Only the best come north&rdquo;<\/h3>\n<p>The motto is on the sign at the front gate and in the mouth of every commander who arrives. It is part recruiting line, part joke about the weather, and part a claim that the hardest mission in the Air Force needs the steadiest people. Commanders keep insisting it is not just a sign.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">The base&rsquo;s own newcomer guide records a lowest ambient temperature of 40 degrees below zero Fahrenheit and a wind chill of 69 below.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">05<\/div>\n<h3>Built with Minot&rsquo;s own money<\/h3>\n<p>North Dakota went out and bought this base. Businessmen and citizens of Minot subscribed about 50,000 dollars to buy the first parcel of land, while the bank president, the chamber of commerce and the mayor lobbied Washington for the installation. Ground was broken on farmland thirteen miles north of the city in July 1955.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Roughly 300 local workers built the base, which opened in January 1957 and today covers 5,342 acres.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">06<\/div>\n<h3>Where the Minuteman III began<\/h3>\n<p>The first Minuteman III ever placed on operational alert went into a Minot silo. The 5th Bomb Wing is also the host unit, so the bomber wing runs the runway, the gate, the housing and the hospital for everybody, missileers included.<\/p>\n<p>The published headcounts do not quite agree. The 5th Bomb Wing fact sheet lists about 5,470 military members and 722 civilians, and the 91st Missile Wing adds nearly 1,800 more. The fiscal year 2024 economic impact statement counted 5,459 active-duty personnel, 591 civilians and 6,346 dependents, a supported population of 12,825, against a base fact sheet figure near 14,624. The honest answer lies between them. That year the base&rsquo;s measured local economic impact was 651.6 million dollars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>What a missile-field alert actually is<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The 91st Missile Wing&rsquo;s working area is not a flight line. It is 150 launch facilities and 15 launch control centres strung across about 8,500 square miles of North Dakota, from the Canadian border down and west of the base. The flights are lettered Alpha through Oscar and split between the 740th, 741st and 742nd Missile Squadrons; each is one missile alert facility with ten silos around it. A wing account of the annual code change states the figures plainly.<\/p>\n<p>Two officers pull the alert together, sealed in a hardened capsule reached by a lift, with the blast doors shut behind them. Above them at ground level sits a small compound with a facility manager, a cook and a security forces section; the manager&rsquo;s job, as one at Minot put it, is to take care of the members and the facility in which the intercontinental ballistic missile mission takes place. Maintenance teams and convoys drive to the silos in all weather on gravel section roads, in a climate whose recorded extremes run from 107 degrees Fahrenheit to 40 below.<\/p>\n<p>Reaching a silo quickly is the job of the 54th Helicopter Squadron, which has flown UH-1N Twin Hueys over the field since 1996 and gives the security forces aerial surveillance, rapid response and fire support. It is converting from eight Hueys to eleven MH-139A Grey Wolves, and broke ground in August 2023 on a 133,000 square foot complex for 35 airmen on 24-hour shifts. The Grey Wolf reached initial operational capability at Malmstrom in August 2026; Minot is third in line.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">03<\/span><span>29 and 30 August 2007: how six live warheads flew to Louisiana<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The AGM-129 Advanced Cruise Missile was being retired, and retired missiles were ferried to Barksdale with inert tactical ferry payloads fitted in place of their warheads. On the morning of 29 August 2007 a breakout crew went into a weapons storage bunker at Minot to prepare a pylon of six. Munitions control had changed which missiles were to go without telling the maintenance shop that swaps the warheads, and only one of the two pylons had been made safe.<\/p>\n<p>The second pylon still carried six live W80-1 warheads. The missile safe status check that would have caught it had been dropped from the local checklist without documented authority. The handling crew did not do it; the security checkpoint did not verify the load; the aircraft crew chief, not nuclear-trained, signed for it; and the radar navigator spot-checked one missile on the other wing, found a training warhead and assumed the rest matched. The B-52H then sat overnight without the guard a nuclear load requires.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft took off at 08.40 on 30 August and landed at Barksdale at 11.23, then sat parked while the munitions team worked through other business. At about 20.30 a crew arrived to download the missiles, a supervisor looked at the pylon, recognised live warheads and had the aircraft secured. Counting from the moment the weapons left the bunker, they had been outside mandatory nuclear security procedures for roughly 36 hours. The Air Force declared a Bent Spear.<\/p>\n<p>Later assessments were blunt. Investigators found a munitions squadron whose commander and operations officer had stepped back from daily storage operations, a complex maintenance schedule passed around on slides by one inexperienced airman, nuclear and non-nuclear cruise missiles stored together in a way once forbidden, and local procedures drifting away from headquarters. Airmen who raised the risk of confusing the two kinds of missile had been told there were too many safeguards in place for that ever to occur.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">04<\/span><span>What the Bent Spear cost, and what it built<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The first reckoning came on 19 October 2007. Colonel Bruce C. Emig of the 5th Bomb Wing and Colonel Cynthia M. Lundell of its maintenance group were relieved, as was Colonel Todd C. Westhauser of the 2nd Operations Group at Barksdale; four more actions were taken at lieutenant colonel level and below. The wing was decertified from handling nuclear munitions and tactical ferry missions stopped Air Force-wide. Contemporary reporting put the airmen decertified or punished at between 65 and about 70; the Air Force gave no total.<\/p>\n<p>The reviews that followed did not stop at Minot. A Defense Science Board task force under retired Chief of Staff General Larry D. Welch and an Air Force Blue Ribbon Review under Major General Polly Peyer both briefed the Senate Armed Services Committee on 12 February 2008. Neither found the weapons had been insecure; both found the wider enterprise rotten with inattention. The Board wrote that the Department of Defense had received credible reports of declining focus for at least a decade with little effective response.<\/p>\n<p>What finished two careers was the pairing of Minot with a second failure: four Mk 12 ballistic missile nose-cone assemblies mistakenly shipped to Taiwan in 2006. Admiral Kirkland H. Donald&rsquo;s investigation found commonalities between the two and called them indicative of an overall decline in Air Force nuclear weapons stewardship. On 5 June 2008 Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced he had accepted the resignations of Secretary of the Air Force Michael W. Wynne and Chief of Staff General T. Michael Moseley. The Schlesinger Task Force then urged a single nuclear command, and Air Force Global Strike Command stood up on 7 August 2009.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">05<\/span><span>Bought by a town, built for interceptors<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Minot Air Force Base exists because the city of Minot went and got it. With the polar route running straight over North Dakota, the Air Force wanted a northern interceptor base, and local men set out to win it: A. R. Weinhandl of the First National Bank, Ulric M. Gwynn of the chamber of commerce and Mayor Maurice Harrington lobbied Washington while businessmen and citizens subscribed about 50,000 dollars to buy the first land. Ground was broken on 12 July 1955.<\/p>\n<p>Around 300 local workers built it and the first airmen arrived in January 1957, Air Defense Command standing up the 32d Air Base Group as host that February. From 1 February 1960 the 5th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, the Spittin&rsquo; Kittens, flew alert from Minot on F-106 Delta Darts for a quarter of a century; F-15A Eagles arrived from December 1984 and the squadron left for Vance Air Force Base in 1988. A two-storey SAGE blockhouse ran the air picture from June 1961.<\/p>\n<p>The strategic mission arrived alongside it and then displaced it. The 4136th Strategic Wing formed in September 1958 and the first B-52H landed on 10 July 1961. On 10 and 11 January 1962 a Minot-assigned B-52H flew unrefuelled from Kadena to Torrej&#243;n in more than 21 hours, a straight-line distance record of 12,532 miles; President Kennedy had the crew to Washington. In the summer of 1968 the place was reorganised: the 5th Bombardment Wing came from Travis and the 91st Strategic Missile Wing from Glasgow, Montana.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">06<\/span><span>Sentinel: the most expensive thing that will ever happen to this prairie<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>The Minuteman III in Minot&rsquo;s silos went on alert in 1970 and was meant to last ten years. Its replacement, the LGM-35A Sentinel, is to take over all 400 deployed missiles one for one across the three wings. In January 2024 the Air Force reported a Nunn-McCurdy breach. On 8 July 2024 the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, William LaPlante, certified it anyway, saying no alternative programme could meet the requirement for less.<\/p>\n<p>The certified figure was 140.9 billion dollars against an original 77.7 billion, a growth of 81 per cent, with a delay of several years. Later reporting is less tidy: by 2026 figures near 160 billion dollars were circulating while the Pentagon still treated 141 billion as the cap pending Milestone B. In May 2025 the Air Force abandoned the plan to reuse the existing silos, citing unacceptable risks to cost, schedule and weapon system performance, and chose to dig roughly 450 new ones.<\/p>\n<p>For Minot that means the longest wait and the biggest building site. The conversion runs F. E. Warren first, Malmstrom second, Minot third, and North Dakota&rsquo;s senior senator, John Hoeven, has pressed publicly for the three bases to be done concurrently rather than in sequence. Initial capability is now advertised for the early 2030s. He ejected. The aircraft went through about three feet of ice on Lake Sakakawea, north-west of New Town, leaving a hole some 40 feet across, and settled in about 70 feet of water. A rancher, Arthur Langved, found the pilot a mile from the hole.
