about three kilometres south of Vojens in Southern Jutland, is where the whole of Denmark&rsquo;s fighter force now lives. The German Wehrmacht laid the airfield out in 1943 as Fliegerhorst Hadersleben; after the liberation it became a camp for German refugees, holding some 4,000 at its peak, and it joined the Danish air force in 1953. In the 1950s it was built up as one of three NATO Main Air Bases in Denmark, and in 2006 it was renamed Fighter Wing Skrydstrup and became home to every Danish combat aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>The F-35 era began on 13 or 14 September 2023, when the first Danish F-35As landed here (Danish Defence gives both dates); about 8,000 guests, among them Crown Prince Frederik and the defence minister, attended the handover on 1 October 2023. Eskadrille 727, founded at Karup on 1 November 1952 and the air force&rsquo;s oldest fighter squadron, was picked to carry the new type, as it had carried the F-84, F-100 and F-16 before it. Denmark has bought 43 F-35s in all. The F-16s that had flown from Skrydstrup since 1980 made their final flight on 18 January 2026; some were sold to Argentina and others donated to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Skrydstrup holds Denmark&rsquo;s quick reaction alert: two fighters ready to launch within minutes, all year. The F-35 flew its first alert mission at the end of March 2025, against a Russian Il-20 over the Baltic near Bornholm. The Danish Defence counts 80 scrambles in 2022, 55 in 2023, 81 in 2024 and 89 in 2025 up to 30 November, almost all of them over the Baltic Sea. A Challenger left for Sicily on the night of 18 March 2011, and the F-16s went into action two days later.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Six F-16s flew 600 missions from Sigonella and dropped 923 precision-guided bombs between 20 March and 31 October 2011.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"kf\">\n<div class=\"kfn\">06<\/div>\n<h3>F-16s for Ukraine and Argentina<\/h3>\n<p>Skrydstrup&rsquo;s F-16s were not scrapped. Some were donated to Ukraine and others were sold to Argentina.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"kff\">Denmark agreed to sell 24 F-16s to Argentina and handed over the first six on 6 December 2025. It announced 19 for Ukraine on 20 August 2023.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<hr class=\"divider\">\n<section id=\"deep\">\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<div class=\"kicker\">Go deeper<\/div>\n<h2>The long version<\/h2>\n<div class=\"deep\">\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">01<\/span><span>Fliegerhorst Hadersleben: a German airfield and a refugee camp<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Skrydstrup lies in Southern Jutland, about three kilometres south of Vojens, and the airfield is German-built. According to the Lex encyclopedia entry by S&#248;ren N&#248;rby and Niels Bo Poulsen of the Danish Defence Academy, the occupying forces laid it out in 1943 as Fliegerhorst Hadersleben, named after the nearby town that Danes call Haderslev. The English Wikipedia article on the wing is used here only as a finding aid. It says the base was meant to hold bomber and fighter units defending the Atlantic Wall, but those units never arrived because materials ran short. No official Danish page confirms that detail.<\/p>\n<p>After the liberation in May 1945 the airfield became a camp for German refugees. Lex puts the number at about 4,000 at its peak, and the camp closed in 1947. Skrydstrup was not unusual in this: Lex records that Karup, another airfield the Germans built in Jutland, housed some 22,000 German refugees between 1945 and 1947.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark joined NATO in 1949 and created an independent air force on 1 October 1950, and the empty German airfield then found a new use. Lex records that the site was brought up to NATO standards and inaugurated as Flyvestation Skrydstrup in 1953. By 1954 the station had its full planned strength. Several Danish air bases share this origin: the Cold War heritage portal Danmark under Den Kolde Krig notes that most of the air force&rsquo;s bases were founded by the Germans during the occupation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">02<\/span><span>A NATO main air base: Thunderjets, Hunters and Super Sabres<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Danish Defence&rsquo;s official history says the bases at Skrydstrup, Karup and Aalborg were built up as the air force&rsquo;s primary bases with money from NATO&rsquo;s infrastructure programme. The cold-war portal also links Skrydstrup to the NEPS fuel pipeline, which carried jet fuel to NATO airfields. It says the air force built 84 hardened aircraft shelters across its bases between 1974 and 1977.<\/p>\n<p>The first jets came from American aid. The Danmarks Flymuseum list records 238 F-84G Thunderjets in service from 1952 to 1961, spread across Eskadrille 725 to 730. Lex lists the F-84G, the Hawker Hunter and the F-100 Super Sabre among the types stationed at Skrydstrup, along with T-33 jet trainers, T-17 Supporters and Chipmunks. The 30 Hunter F.51 day fighters and 4 two-seaters served with Eskadrille 724 from 1956 to 1974. The museum list gives 31 F-100Ds and 7 F-100Fs for Eskadrille 725, 727 and 730 from 1959 to 1982. Other counts are higher, so the true figure falls somewhere in a range of 38&ndash;72, depending on which deliveries are counted.<\/p>\n<p>Eskadrille 727 is now the only squadron at Skrydstrup. It was not founded there: Danish Defence says it was formed at Karup on 1 November 1952 and introduced the F-100 in 1959. The Wikipedia article on the wing dates Eskadrille 730&rsquo;s formation to 1954 with F-84Gs, and its move to the F-100 to 1961. No official page confirms those dates. The Saab Draken, which followed the F-100 in part of the force, flew with Eskadrille 725 and 729 from Karup, not Skrydstrup, from 1970 to 1993.<\/p>\n<p>The first decade was dangerous. The official history calls the air force&rsquo;s first years marked by many accidents, and illustrates the point with a crashed F-84 from 1955. Lex records that an F-84 crashed at Skrydstrup in December 1955. It also records an F-100 crash about 10 km from the base in August 1968. Neither source gives casualty figures for those two crashes, and none are given here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">03<\/span><span>The F-16 years, from first landing to Sigonella<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Denmark bought the F-16 as part of a joint European deal with Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway. Danish Defence&rsquo;s farewell article says that General Christian Hvidt, later Chief of Defence, landed the first Danish F-16 at Skrydstrup 46 years before the type&rsquo;s final flight in January 2026. According to that article, Eskadrille 727 carried the main responsibility for bringing the aircraft into service. How many F-16s Denmark owned is disputed: Wikipedia counts 78 airframes in Danish service, while the Danmarks Flymuseum list gives 70 plus a separate row for upgraded aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>For most of the Cold War, Skrydstrup was one of three fighter bases. That ended with the 2005 defence agreement. According to Lex, all of the air force&rsquo;s combat aircraft were gathered at Skrydstrup in 2006, and the station was renamed Fighter Wing Skrydstrup. The Lex entry was written before the F-35 arrived. It describes the wing as two squadrons, 725 and 730, flying about 30 F-16s between them. Danish Defence&rsquo;s own articles instead name 727 as the lead F-16 squadron, so the Lex squadron list looks out of date.<\/p>\n<p>The base&rsquo;s biggest war was Libya. Danish Defence records that a CL-604 Challenger took off from Skrydstrup at 22:47 on 18 March 2011 to prepare the deployment. The first combat mission was flown from Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily at 15:10 on 20 March. Six F-16s took part, four for operations and two in reserve, and 338 Danes served in 475 rotations. By 31 October 2011 the jets had flown 600 missions and dropped 923 precision-guided bombs. On 2 November all six landed back in Denmark, together with a C-130.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<details class=\"ddet\">\n<summary><span class=\"dn\">04<\/span><span>The F-35 comes to Skrydstrup<\/span><span class=\"dx\">Read<\/span><\/summary>\n<div class=\"dbody\">\n<p>Parliament chose the F-35A on 9 June 2016 and ordered 27. On 2 February 2022 the air force chief, Major General Jan Dam, announced that the new aircraft would be flown by Eskadrille 727. He said the reason was that it was the air force&rsquo;s oldest surviving fighter squadron and had twice before introduced a new type. Eskadrille 730 had been dormant since the end of 2019 or 2020 and was then formally deactivated. A new F-35 Campus was built on the site of its old buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Danish Defence gives two dates for the first arrival. Its news article on the handover says the fighters had arrived on 13 September 2023. The air force history page says the first F-35 flown by a Danish pilot landed at Skrydstrup on 14 September 2023. The pages do not explain the difference, so this page gives 13&ndash;14 September. The formal handover took place on 1 October 2023 in front of about 8,000 guests, among them Crown Prince Frederik and the defence minister, Troels Lund Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p>The fleet has grown since then. On 10 October 2025 the government and the defence parties agreed to buy 16 more F-35s for 29.0 billion kroner, which brings the total to 43. At that date 15 aircraft were in Denmark and 6 were at the training base in the United States. The first 27 were due to be delivered by 2026.
