O Capit\u00e3o Gary Foust, um experiente piloto de ca\u00e7a do 71\u00ba Esquadr\u00e3o de Ca\u00e7a Interceptador, estacionado na Base A\u00e9rea de Malmstrom, em Montana, estava realizando um exerc\u00edcio de treinamento em uma fria manh\u00e3 de fevereiro. O F-106A que ele pilotava \u2014 n\u00famero de s\u00e9rie 58-0787 \u2014 era um dos ca\u00e7as mais avan\u00e7ados do arsenal da For\u00e7a A\u00e9rea, um interceptador Mach 2+ projetado para subir, virar e combater em altitudes onde a maioria dos pilotos mal conseguia respirar.<\/p>\n\n<p>O exerc\u00edcio foi intenso: subidas \u00edngremes, curvas em mergulho e manobras de alta for\u00e7a G, projetadas para testar tanto o piloto quanto a aeronave no limite de seus limites. N\u00e3o se tratava de voos de treinamento cautelosos \u2014 era o exerc\u00edcio real, o tipo de voo que exigia foco absoluto e t\u00e9cnica perfeita.<\/p>\n\n<p>Ent\u00e3o algo deu errado. A causa exata se perdeu na hist\u00f3ria, mas o que importa \u00e9 o resultado: o F-106 entrou em parafuso plano.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Giro Plano: O Desafio Supremo<\/h2>\n\n<p>Um parafuso plano \u00e9 o pesadelo de qualquer piloto de ca\u00e7a. Ao contr\u00e1rio de um parafuso convencional, onde o nariz da aeronave baixa e h\u00e1 algum fluxo de ar frontal, um parafuso plano \u00e9 uma perda de controle do voo, onde a aeronave gira quase horizontalmente, em torno de seu eixo vertical, com movimento frontal m\u00ednimo. Os procedimentos de recupera\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o funcionam. As asas perdem sustenta\u00e7\u00e3o. As superf\u00edcies de controle encontram ar estagnado. E a cada segundo que passa, a gravidade puxa a aeronave para baixo.<\/p>\n\n<p>Foust tentou de tudo. Acionou os controles de recupera\u00e7\u00e3o, lutou com o manche, queimou combust\u00edvel em uma subida desesperada para ganhar velocidade e retomar o controle da aeronave. Nada funcionou. O F-106 permaneceu preso em parafuso plano, descendo, girando, incontrol\u00e1vel.<\/p>\n\n<p>No momento em que decidiu ejetar, ele estava a aproximadamente 15.000 p\u00e9s \u2014 uma altitude t\u00e3o baixa que n\u00e3o haveria tempo para uma segunda chance. Ele ejetou.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A Recupera\u00e7\u00e3o Imposs\u00edvel<\/h2>\n\n<p>\u00c9 aqui que a hist\u00f3ria se torna extraordin\u00e1ria.<\/p>\n\n<p>Quando Foust se ejetou, a enorme acelera\u00e7\u00e3o do assento ejetor o puxou para cima e para tr\u00e1s com uma for\u00e7a tremenda. Seu corpo, subitamente removido da aeronave, provocou uma mudan\u00e7a no centro de gravidade. Naquela fra\u00e7\u00e3o de segundo, o F-106 \u2014 ainda girando em seu parafuso mortal \u2014 passou a ter uma distribui\u00e7\u00e3o de peso completamente diferente. Com a aus\u00eancia do piloto e do assento ejetor, o equil\u00edbrio da aeronave mudou fundamentalmente.<\/p>\n\n<p>Ningu\u00e9m planejou isso. Nenhum engenheiro havia projetado algo assim. Mas a f\u00edsica \u00e9 indiferente \u00e0s expectativas: a mudan\u00e7a no centro de gravidade foi suficiente para alterar a din\u00e2mica de rota\u00e7\u00e3o. O F-106, inacreditavelmente, come\u00e7ou a se recuperar.<\/p>\n\n<p>O nariz da aeronave foi gradualmente baixando em dire\u00e7\u00e3o a uma atitude mais convencional. As asas come\u00e7aram a gerar sustenta\u00e7\u00e3o novamente. A rota\u00e7\u00e3o diminuiu. E, \u00e0 medida que a altitude continuava a se dissipar, o Delta Dart passou de um parafuso plano para uma descida. As asas ainda forneciam sustenta\u00e7\u00e3o. A aeronave estava em uma atitude control\u00e1vel. E logo abaixo, um milharal coberto de neve se estendia como uma vasta e generosa pista de pouso.<\/p>\n\n<p>O pouso de barriga foi suave. A aeronave assentou na neve, o atrito diminuindo sua velocidade, e finalmente parou com os motores ainda funcionando. Um fazendeiro que estava por perto ouviu o barulho e a encontrou. Os danos foram m\u00ednimos. A aeronave estava intacta, repar\u00e1vel e, ainda mais incr\u00edvel, operacional.<\/p>\n\n<p>O capit\u00e3o Gary Foust aterrissou em seguran\u00e7a de paraquedas a quil\u00f4metros de dist\u00e2ncia, ficando completamente chocado ao saber mais tarde que sua aeronave havia feito algo que nenhuma aeronave deveria ser capaz de fazer: pousar sozinha.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Depois do Imposs\u00edvel<\/h2>\n\n<p>A For\u00e7a A\u00e9rea recuperou o F-106A, avaliou os danos e o reparou. A aeronave retornou ao servi\u00e7o e voou por mais 16 anos, at\u00e9 1986.
