The National Army Museum dates the first Army Air Corps to 21 December 1941, when it was created as the umbrella for the new Parachute Regiment and Glider Pilot Regiment; Wikipedia, following the Royal Warrant, puts it in 1942. Its glider pilots were soldiers who flew: they landed troops in Sicily in 1943, took the Caen canal and Orne river bridges in the first minutes of 6 June 1944, and flew into Arnhem and across the Rhine. Wikipedia’s article on the regiment calls it both the shortest-lived regiment in the British Army and the one with the highest casualty rate per head. Alongside them, Royal Artillery officers flew Austers as air observation post pilots in RAF squadrons: No. 651, the first, formed at Old Sarum on 1 August 1941 and went into action in North Africa in November 1942. The wartime corps was disbanded in August 1949.

1957–1970: a new corps at Middle Wallop, and small wars in Borneo and Aden

The present corps was formed on 1 September 1957, the date on the British Army’s own page: the Glider Pilot Regiment and the artillery’s Air OP squadrons were merged, and No. 651 Squadron changed its RAF prefix for the letters AAC. Its headquarters today are at Middle Wallop in Hampshire, beside the Army Flying Museum. Before the merger, army pilots had already flown in Korea, where the Army Flying Museum records nearly 3,000 sorties by 1903 Air OP Flight and about 9,000 by 1913 Light Liaison Flight between 1951 and 1955. The new corps swapped fixed wings for rotors: 64 Skeeters, then Sioux and the turbine-powered Scout, of which about 150 were bought and which Wikipedia says lost three airframes written off in the Radfan fighting in Aden. Borneo (1962–67) and Aden (1964–67) were the first campaigns, fought in jungle and mountains with light helicopters that were more useful as eyes and ambulances than as weapons.

1969–1990: Northern Ireland, the Rhine and the Falklands

From 1969 Northern Ireland became the corps’ longest campaign: the Army lists Operation Banner from 1969 to 2007. Scouts, then Gazelles and Lynx, flew surveillance, patrol insertions and resupply over South Armagh, and the corps took losses there; Wikipedia records a Gazelle downed after IRA fire on 17 February 1978 and a Lynx hit by an IRA mortar in 1994, whose crew survived. The National Army Museum dates the corps’ status as a direct-fire combat arm to 1972. In Germany the regiments sat with the British Army of the Rhine at Detmold, Soest and elsewhere; the Lynx arrived in 1979, and from 1981 sixty carried TOW anti-tank missiles. In 1982 656 Squadron sailed for the Falklands with Scouts and Gazelles. The Army Flying Museum credits it with 588 operational flying hours and 195 casualties evacuated, at least 20 of them Argentine; one Gazelle and four men were lost to fire from HMS Cardiff on the night of 5–6 June.

1991–2010: the Gulf, Joint Helicopter Command and the Apache

In the 1991 Gulf War the corps went to war as an anti-tank force: Wikipedia counts 24 TOW-armed Lynx, with Gazelles, and 4 Regiment AAC was among the units deployed. Balkan peacekeeping followed. In October 1999 the Army’s helicopters were put under Joint Helicopter Command, a tri-service headquarters recommended by the 1998 Strategic Defence Review that also took the RAF’s support helicopters (the Chinooks, Pumas and Merlins) and the Royal Navy’s Commando Helicopter Force. The corps kept its own cap badge, but not its own command. The big change was the Apache: 67 ordered, the first eight built by Boeing and the rest by Westland, in service from 2001 according to the Army Flying Museum and fully delivered by July 2004. It went to Helmand in 2006, and by April 2014 British Apaches had flown 50,000 hours in Afghanistan, one third of all their flying, according to the Ministry of Defence.

2011–2019: Apaches at sea off Libya, the last flight in Germany, the Wildcat

Libya in 2011 showed a different use. Apaches of 656 Squadron sailed in HMS Ocean, and on 4 June 2011 struck a radar site and a checkpoint near Brega — “the first operational mission flown by British Army Apaches at sea”, in the words of the Defence Secretary, Liam Fox. The Ministry of Defence later said they had been allocated 49 missions in four months. Afghanistan continued to cost lives: on 26 April 2014 a Lynx Mk9A crashed in Kandahar province, killing five, three of them Army Air Corps. On 11 October 2013 1 Regiment AAC ended British military flying in Germany when it left Gütersloh; it re-formed with the new Wildcat at RNAS Yeovilton, sharing the base with the Navy’s Wildcats. The Army’s 34 Wildcat AH1s, part of a 62-aircraft order, entered service in 2014 and replaced the Lynx, which bowed out in 2018.

2019–2026: two types, fewer people, and a wait for drones

Since 2019 the corps has been shrinking to its core. The Islander and Defender surveillance aircraft of 651 Squadron went to the RAF in April 2019 and were retired on 30 June 2021; the Gazelle, flown since 1974, made its farewell from Aldergrove in October 2023; and the RAF took over the Brunei helicopter role in May 2023. What is left is two front-line types: 50 AH-64E Apaches, the last accepted by Defence Equipment and Support on 6 March 2025 for 1.7 billion pounds, and the Wildcat. Wikipedia puts the corps at about 2,000 regulars and 150 aircraft. The open question is drones. The Watchkeeper, which belongs to the Royal Artillery, is being withdrawn, and the June 2026 Defence Investment Plan promised up to 24 armed autonomous drones under Project NYX to fly alongside the Apache by 2030. Whether the Army Air Corps or someone else flies them has not yet been published.

The present corps was formed on 1 September 1957, the date on the British Army’s own page: the Glider Pilot Regiment and the artillery’s Air OP squadrons were merged, and No. 651 Squadron changed its RAF prefix for the letters AAC.Army Air Corps (United Kingdom) · verified 2026-09-30

At a glance

The Army Air Corps (United Kingdom) in numbers

Service

Official name

Army Air CorpsThe name used by the British Army on army.mod.uk.
